Raleigh NC - Jordan and Falls Lakes

We've been to Jordan lake a few times last summer. watch out for the tree stumps. Great for tubing and swimming.

Here's my opinion on Jordan Lake

Every year, the public access points are closed due to bacteria for at least a week or more. Plus, the city of Durham puts their wastewater into the lake. Town of Cary get their drinking water from it though so it must be OK  I'm not putting my kids in it though...

Harris lake is much cleaner but, please be extremely careful swimming in the shallows or in any cove. Never, ever allow your kids to swim without a life jacket even if they are excellent swimmers. There is a water plant called hydrilla that grows in the shallower areas and if you get your legs in it, as you move it wraps you up like a net and your own kicking pulls you under. I remember the headlines a few yrs ago when they found a 3 yr old that spent the night on a bass boat waiting for his brother and dad to come back from swimming.

Living in western Cary, we boat on Jordan a lot. The ramp access is excellent for launching our 260 DA and the lake is big enough to make it enjoyable for day trips. We keep the boat in covered storage just 15 minutes away on Rt. 64 and so it is very convenient. You do have to watch the stumps in a couple of places, especially when the level is low. You also don't want to go under the /rt. 64 bridge at anything over the posted limit on a weekend day in season or you will get fined.

Falls Lake, in my opinion is pretty much a waste of time for anything other than open-bows and other runabouts. It consists of one small navigable "lake-like" area that requires only about 4 minutes to traverse and then a 1/2 hour river cruise at slow speeds - as it is too narrow and crowded for much else.

lI've boated on both Jordan and Falls lake. Jordan is more Lake with some river and Falls Lake is more river than lake. I find Jordan lake more crowed than Falls. Falls has had some bateria issues and beaches were closed alot last year.
I keep my boat at Rollingview Marina it's nicer than the Crosswinds trailer and they actual have wet slips for rent. Jordan has a two year waiting list the last time I checked. The best thing about Falls is its closer to my house. If you are ever at falls lake. Give me a holler.

Ken - I agree that Falls is definitely less crowded. They also have a great mechanic up there at Rollingview - Henry (Master Tech). He replaced my hydrolocked 5.7 EFI with a new 350 Magnum last summer and did a great job for me.

Henry is the man. Just checked out my boat last week. Clean bill of health and we'll be ready for the 80 deg weather this weekend.

Jordan lake is crowded in some areas, but there are enough decent sized branchs to be able to go tubing or just relaxing in. We were there last weekend and the water levels looked pretty good.

I have my boat wet slipped on Rollingview. E dock stop by and have a beer if you're over that.

But if you want a really nice lake go to Karr lake

i believe you mean 'Kerr lake'...it is on my list of lakes we want to visit although it is several hours drive for me...i hear it is nice and very large.....now that the price of gas has come down some the cost of the trip becomes a little more attractive....
