So this has never happened to me before but this weekend I had some knuckle head tie up to my boat when I was away from my boat . This boat only had one tiny fender that was useless and the boat was banging up against my boat . I asked the dock hands about the boat and they didn't have a clue and didn't do anything about it.To prevent any damage I put a boat ball between my boat to keep it from banging up my boat . I did give the guy a ear full when he came back to leave . Does a marina have any responsibility for your boat when it in their marina ?

I sometimes think a cabin on 100 acres in Alaska would be nice. People are idiots.

Did the marina approve/ watch the tie up? Is it "normal" there?

Said boat would become untied and cast adrift rather quickly...

agreed. or i would take it for a ride away from the marina and leave it afloat safely away from other boats. near rocks...or rapids....

That's insane... Someone you don't even know?? Wtf is going on over there ..

PIB? .....if so normal to raft up but still idiot for failure of proper procedure (it's not rocket science).

The marina has no responsibility. They lease the space under the slip at the marina from the state or Federal Government, whichever owns it. Therefore, the boat tied to yours is totally liable and your only recourse in case of damage. Similarly, you are liable for any damage to the offenders boat if you move it.

and it was strange that the current took it over a mile away in such a short time at slack tide with no wind...

I'd lose my mind if that happened at marina. also the sea pirate who is in charge of the place would probably impending the offending vessel and hold it for ransom

I've never seen this at a marina. We do get this quite a bit at the Georgetown Waterfront in DC though. I've seen people raft up to someone who is tied on the bulkhead even when the "inside" boat's owners aren't there. Its like the water version of being blocked in by someone double parked.

this is insane, ive never heard of this. if there is ever a situation where boats get rafted then the dockmaster should tell you in advance you may be rafted up on and the marina stafff should be the ones tying up the boat.

I assume you were a transient visitor?

Maybe it's changed, but last I knew Seaway Marina had a mandatory rafting policy. The public docks at Put-in-Bay also have mandatory rafting (weekends only maybe?). Canalside n the Buffalo Harbor now has mandatory rafting too.

All of which might explain why he was there..... none of which explains why he doesn't know how to tie off a boat..... I think the correct nautical term for him is idiot

What did you ask them? Do they just let boaters come and go freely, no charge?

Ah rafting in the Islands. I'm surprised that someone snuck into Seaway and was able to raft off without someone knowing. Last i heard they ran a pretty tight ship.

That would never happen on B dock at the Bay. Maybe A and C.

Here is a shot from the monument i took on Saturday to let people get an idea of the way rafting is done in our neck of the woods. B (center pier) was full because the dock masters are very well organised and maximize their space. A and C are hodgepodged together leaving a lot of unused dockage space.

So how the hell does that work if you are the inside guy and ready to leave? I thought it was bad being the guy on the inside of an anchored raft that had to leave early. This is nuts.

That picture looks a lot like how it is done at Block Island (Champlins). On a busy weekend the will pack it in pretty tight, and yes sometimes the inside guy needs to get out. The difference here I that they have experienced dock hands, and seem to manage the impossible very well. It is known that you may be rafted and all the tie up is done by the marina.

You'd be surprised how well they do if someone on the inside needs out. Usually involves untying up to 3 boats, floating them out of the rack, back to another rack temporarily, letting the offending boat go and floating the original 3 back into the original rack.

On B dock it's a pretty regular crowd. IF you are there early enough to get a wall spot the dedication to the dock is real and you don't really need to be anywhere until after checkout at 11 on sunday. Regardless the team of dock-masters do very well at organizing the chaos.

I was the last boat in this weekend, and i arrived at 7:30 on Friday night. I'm the pewter hulled 340 with the bike on the bow in the center of the photo.
