I just bought a amberjack 29' , The GPS has no chip and no radar on boat, So I am looking to update the electronics. Need help I think I should use the Garmin 4210 with Radome 18 4kw or radome HD Digital or 404 open array. Not sure if garmin is right maybe Furuno or northstar. Any help will be great.
What is better Radome or open array

Furuno makes the best radar, I prefer Northstar for a multi function display due to brightness, ease of use and reliablity. There is no question that the open array is far better and will produce consistant target returns. I have a dome and will be upgrading to either the hi def digital or open array northstar, I will sea trial both. If you can spend the $ go open array. If you go furuno, look at the display on a helm in direct sunlight. Make sure this display will suit your needs.

Go with the newest HD you can afford. I have been in the RADAR business for many years (Navy and Civ). The newest HD technology is really good, cheap and very power friendly. I highly recommend it. I have an older Raytheon system on my AJ but will upgrade to the HD when I have the $$. Unless of course you are going out into open ocean. But then the 290 is not the best choice for that.

BTW... The only diff between a radome and open is the size and speed of the array. The quicker close-array (radome) can be just as accurate (but not at long distance). The radome is generally more accurate closer in due to the faster RPM of the array. The open is better for long distance (but less so for closer in due to slower rotating speed).

But then again, I am thinking Fire Control. lol! Still valid though.

Go for the HD. Best and newest compromise ever.

Plus one on the northstar digital units. Lowrance also makes a very good economical unit the HD line. And I think there is one on the deal of the day today at BOE. 11/30/09 used them both and I think I would go with the Lowrance if I did it again for the fish finder
