Radio Whine

We have this tremendously irritating noise which comes from the speakers when the engine controls are on (engines not required to be running - just the ECMs), or the genset is running. It is a high pitched whine (not unlike my three year old). We have a selector switch in our radio system which allows the cabin or cockpit to be turned on and off. Has anyone ever run into this or any ideas? I am thinking to perhaps replace the selector switch - somehow interference is getting into the sound system. Thanks in advance.

I just tracked down a similar problem. Every 12v system made a pop thru the stereo when turning devices on and off - shower sump caused the most trouble, plus engine whine while they ran. My amp had to be switched on (cockpit sound) at the panel for the problem to occur. I also noted the amp was running very very hot - even at low sound levels. Cutting to the chase - I had a bad RCA(s) running from the radio to the amp. I first used a cheap spare set (that came with some other audio equipment) to diagnose but then went to the local car stereo shop and bought a "double twisted pair" in my case by Rockford Fosgate and troubles went away. Amp temperature went back to normal. A bad ground is a second area to check. Good Luck

Yep. Get a RCA noise filter and you should be good to go. You're hearing the power to your other accessories interfering with your radio.

Any Best Buy should have them.

I have this problem in my car - occurred immediately after adding my Ipod. So that made sense.

The boat was fine until recently - no obvious change to cause this.

Will get an isolator but any idea why this magically becomes a problem?

Keep us posted on if this fix takes care of the problem...I have the same issue on my 320 when the genset is running. Thanks!

Put a ground loop isolator in ours, took care of a noise problem we were having when playing music from our PC and Ipod into the head unit.
