I'm a mechanical kind of guy and not the best at electronics unless it can be done with a simple voltmeter...

Two Questions:

The stereo has two sets of speakers. When one pair quits all of the sudden, that would have to be the radio right? I mean both wires and speakers won't stop at the same time. Th other set works fine.

The VHF works but I recently found out that I can't send. Whats the chances that a new cord and mic will solve that? Or is it a crap shoot whether its that or the radio itself?

Thanks,

On my 92' 270 there was a factory toggle switch at the helm that muted the cockpit speakers. You might look for that toggle and the wiring behind it.

Also, I've knocked my vhf antenna on a dock roof before and although it looked fine the unit would not "send" a replacement vhf antenna fixed the issue.

Could be alot of things though...

Cocktail Time is right on......my radio also has a cockpit mute switch.....are you using an amp ? if it isn't the switch....either your amp or radio is dropping a channel......

VHF.....borrow a SWR meter (Standing wave ) local ham club ?? and check the radio out put before the antenna....it connects in line.....if the needle moves you are transmitting......from the radio.....problem is either coax to the antenna or antenna....do not continue to transmit....you will fry the finals in the radio.....and need a new radio....
If the SWR meter does not move.....could be the PTT switch on the mike....or could be the radio itself......wouldn't spend more than 150.00 bux on repair.....you can replace it for that.....

The VHF is a big old Motorolla Triton Nautilus 440. Didn't think to look for a mute button. It'll beep when I key the mic but no transmission. Wonder if a CB cord & mic will screw on? Its externally mounted down in the cabin with no remote speaker.

I guess I really should invest in one of those meters as I could also use it for the CB as well and take some of the guess work out.

The stereo is a newer (relatively) unit. Never thought to swap speaker sets. I hate the stereo (too many electronic gizmos. I wish my cell phone had the old rotary dial pad...) and would love to swap out for a less complicated model - if one still exists but hate to spend money to replace something if it still works too...
