hello all, Merry Christmans and Happy New Year, I noticed a post on the Ray Marine site about upgrading a RL80C to be able to overlay the radar and chart. Has anyone had any experiance with this, Pro/Con Thanks Bob

I have FW version 4.11 running on my RL80C. I can overlay the Radar and GPS.
I assume you are running an older version?

Although I have run with the overlay feature I no longer do, the one screen becomes too busy for me. I find it easier to run the Radar and GPS in track up mode and both on the same scale.
That keeps the GPS and radar screens cleaner.

Doozie:

If your RL80C is original to your '01 boat, it is the older Raytheon unit, and you would have to send it in to Raymarine for the upgrade.....just ask Frank H. They have to add memory, HS bus connectors, FW, etc.. You still won't have the brighter screen offered on the newer (post '03 Raymarine) models. I think they charge around $800-1000 for the upgrade.

I agree with Dave, although the overlay is a neat feature, I added a second RL70 (didin't have room for another RL80) and High Speed Bussed them together. Your '01 Rayhteon is not capable of HS bus, so you would still have to have it upgraded if you wanted to add a second screen on the same bus.

There are more details to the issue of overlay, but if you search here, we had this discussion a while back....

hope this helps...

Thanks All, sounds like I'll just stay with what I have for now. Bob
