Boy oh boy...
Its been a long road....

C80 i stalled, radar installed.... Works great!
But evidently you cant overlay your radar over your gps without a heading sensor.

So i bought a fluxgate heading sensor....st60 compass....and just installed it all.
Used seatalk....red, shield andnyellow as the data.

Spliced it into my existing gps antenna that is also seatalk.

The st60 gets a heading...no issues there....but the c80 doesnt see it.

Is there a menu option or something i am missing???

This is driving me nuts... :)

I have a 2004 C80 with radar and was told one of the software updates remove the overlay option. My manual said it was doable and it drove me crazy trying to figure it out.

Correct....update 5.16 forces the use of a st60 compass or some other heading sensor. I just cant get the heading reading on my c80...i have the sensor....

I don't know about the ST-60 compass, but the SHS-2 heading sensor requires both sea talk connection as well as a nmea0183 connection to the C80. The other thing is that the heading sensor needs to be calibrated to the C80 display before it will work properly.

Call Raymarine and they can probably help. However, I don't think you can splice into Seatalk. I think you need to get a Mutiplexer that relays and routes the signals between devices. I think Seatalk is a 1 to 1 communication protocol and the multiplexor is how you can bridge devices. The loose information I just gave you is based on my dull memory from reading the manuals several years ago so may be complete garbage other than the general concept that I think you need another piece of hardware.

I have a C80 classic too with radar and the overlay works perfectly without a compass. But that is because I left the software at 4.29.

My E120 does it, I haven't used it in a while but it does work. Try calling Ray in NH they always helped me. Don't ask me how I did it, I would have to be in front of it to remember.

You can "splice" SeaTalk. I have the SeaTalk feeds coming in from the GPS, SHS, and Depth transducer all aggregated on three terminal strips.

The photo below shows them. They are located directly above the NMEA0183 multiplexer.

Yes....i know splicing is allowed. I checked all the connecrions...no issues. The c80 just doesnt show the heading. If i go to menu and then compass setup...everything is grayed out and the radar overlay option is also grayed out.

LV,

Crazy question, but do you have any other hardware besides the flux gate compass? I have a flux gate as well, but it is connected to a heading sensor computer. That is actually what gets calibrated.

Yes. The fluxgate goes into the raytheon st60 compass. The compass is hooked via seatalk 3 wire connection to my c80.

Figured it out.

I had originally spliced only the yellow into the seatlk connection of the c80 from the st60 compass.

I was told by raymarine i needed a separate power feed for the st60 so i had the ground and power of the st60 going straight to a separate ground and 5amp protected power.

To fix it, i added a splice from the ground connection back into the ground on the seatalk going into the c80 and bingo...heading shows up!
