Radar Not Working (no data source)

Not yet, the unit was shipped up to New Hampshire on Thursday. I'm thinking it's at least a two day transit so I'm sure I will hear something in the next few days.

I heard back from Raymarine and the module went bad, $815 for a new one. Not sure how common this is but they said it could of been from a spike in power. I was told to never have the radar on when starting the engines.

Wow, sorry to hear about such verdict. Well, at least it makes sense. Do you recall starting your engines with the radar being on?

From what I hear, this is a common issue to have voltage spikes in the units during engines startup. When I just got my 320 and was still learning it’s equipment both MFDs would reboot if I left them on during the engines startup. As soon as I’ve noticed it I always make sure to turn all electronics OFF (MFDs, VHF, CD players and 12v TVs if they’re on, etc.). I think it’s a good habit to have as it keeps your equipment in much safer state. It worked for number of years for me.

One captain who uses Furuno told me that one of big advantages he liked in Furuno vs. other brands (including RM) is that his equipment has power protection feature and there’s no issue during the startup.

Good luck with repairs.

My 4K radar (along with a few other things) was damaged by a lightning strike at the marina, not a direct strike to the boat. Same thing, needed a new main circuit board.

I must admit that I did run the radar/gps before starting the engines, lesson learned if that was the cause. I will keep you all posted once I get it back next week. The Raymarine tech said if you are running with the genset on during the day to run the radar, it doesn't have to be rotating but at least on stand by mode.

UPDATE:
The technician came out to the boat this morning and installed the scanner with the new module and all works great again. Not sure the route cause but I will no longer have the radar/gps on when starting the engines.

I'm glad your issue is solved. I'd say that having your equipment OFF prior starting the engines is good preventive safeguard. I hope that it'll be the last time you have issue with your GPS/Radar.

Happy boating....

Jon,
Glad it's all back to normal.
I had the same problem late last season but just got it worked out.
I will keep a eye out for you on the bay this summer.
