One upshot of the new main AC unit is it is now appearant the other unit isn’t putting out the coldest air. It’s a Dometic Turbo 8k, and uses R22 refrigerant. I know R22 was phased out, but can I get this serviced to kick the can down the road?

$$$ big money for R22 if you can find it. I would replace. I am going to start next year replacing units, at least all of the ones in the cabin area. I am switching to MarinAir units vs Dometic.

Dave I think you can still get it. I believe that is what the HVAC guy put in my home unit that is 22 years old. He told me it was getting very scarce and we should replace the unit in the spring.

Please correct me if wrong but I thought Dometic bought Crusair, MarineAir, and a couple others. Cornering the market on all things boat.

You can definitely still get it, the cost to buy is about $50.00per pound. There are also drop in replacements. RS44B and NEW22. You could ask the manufacturer if it is okay to use the alternatives.

Look into a refrigerant called Enviro Safe
R22, R-22, R 22 Refrigerant, Artic Air, Envirosafe, (6) 4 oz cans | eBay
It is a direct replacement for R12 and R22. I have used it over the years with success. I use it on aircraft AC systems that used R12 or R22 and even R134A and never had an issue with seals or leaks.
Give it a whirl

Be cautious this replacement is propane, propane is an excellent refrigerant and has been used for decades in Europe but remember it is flammable

A total charge is about 1 pound from empty. A top up will be 3 to 4 oz. I cant see how that justifies a multi thousand dollar replacement. I just had 1.5 pounds put on my home AC and with the service call the bill was only 200 bucks.

Likely MarinAire not MarineAir.

@dtfeld I'd just replace it vs sinking cash into an old unit.

Been a big year MX wise, so looking to kick the can down the road. It puts out cold air, just not like it used to. I called the local guru, and I think hes got 3 of us on the same dock, so hopefully it’s worth his while to shoot over here.

maybe I’d better get a new unit before they outlaw AC altogether!
