Quincy to NYC

Bresco.....Trash bags work too over your fenders...You can throw them right into a trash bag afetr use......

Yes we were thinking of the fender boards as well. Hmmm... trash bags sound like a great alternative......

Those marinas you suggested look amazing. Will be looking at changing our route. Anyone going to be in that area on the long weekend or the week following?

I liked the trash bags idea as well, but I think that if the walls have barnacles they’ll go thru the bag and or t-shirt leaving big marks on the fenders. Just thinking loud….

Haven't heard of the trash bag idea before, That could work if they are heavy duty.
The biggest threat to the fenders is the dirt and grit from old spalling concrete walls. Some of the locks haven't been rebuilt in years.
You will see your share of exposed aggregate, but the old walls used gravel rather than crushed stone in the concrete, so not too many sharp edges. We have always just used the fenders as is, dunk 'em to wash grit off before the next lock....scrubbed them up with a brush and spay nine when done.

When we went through the Erie I made fender boards, you can see a pic of them in the post that Alex mentioned:

5th picture down. I am really glad we had them, some of the lock walls were in horrible shape, The entire fender could fall into 'holes' in the wall if it weren't for the boards.

Not to say that you couldn't be careful and try to stay away from those spots, but I don't think a garbage bag would hold up very well in some of the locks.

We also made a trip to Stellwagen Bank to do some whale watching, That was incredible. You can see a few pics of the whales here:

There are a lot of pics, the whales are towards the end.

I thought about using PVC, although I was looking at 3", and it was just about as heavy as the 2x's that I used. What size pipe did you use, and is that black PVC or ABS?

We made it home yesterday. What an amazing trip from Quincy to Niagara Falls. We had our share of the fog which apparently is normal for you Northeasterners but not us here in Niagara. When we have fog it goes away by the time the sun has warmed things up. Those south winds you folks get brings in more fog than I have ever seen in my life. And we lost radar and had to get off the Cape ASAP and ended up in Cuttyhunk. Great stop BTW.

We saw Liberty, went up the Hudson and into the Erie Canal which was still closed so we headed north on the Oswego to the Welland Canal here in Niagara which links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Great trip.

I forgot to mention that the marina in Onset was amazing. We had an alternator go bad and they called up the mechanic to have it fixed. They drove over, picked up the alternator, and had it back repaired in about 2 hours. Didn't charge a small fortune either. Dropped it in and it worked like a charm. Absolutely amazing marina and stupendous service!!

We stopped at Brewer's in Stamford, Connecticut as well. Another amazing marina. They picked us up, brought us into town and returned us home. Great service!!!

Block Island on the other hand was an absolute disappointment. Champlain's Marina charged a fortune for the night, $50.00 for power, had no services available, no stores open, treated us like we had the plaque and told us very promptly at 9:00 am the next morning that it was time to go. They had maybe 15 boats there and no one was waiting for a slip. They were rude and offered nothing for customer satisfaction. Totally dissatified with Champlains.

Liberty Landing was not only beautiful but offered above and beyond great amenities and friendly service.

Cuttyhunk Marina in Gosneld, MA was the cutest little place. We were the only boat in a slip at the time (early in the season) and they were so very friendly and offered us everything they could. Totally recommend them for a small getaway for a fishing town kind of atmosphere. But it is rustic and no showers.

Bresco, wish I knew Baypointe was your starting place as that's my home marina. I would have clued you in about Seacrest Marine, the guy is a clown. The marina is actually very well run and the only complaint everyone has is the that they try to steer to Seacreast every chance they get. Don't know why such a well run marina lets this second rate repair shop operate on their property.

Sorry I hadn't met you beforehand. Bay Pointe was such a nice marina and Ritchie was accommodating but, like you said, the service end of things was less than desirable. Yes, they do send everything to Seacrest
