Quicksilver Generator Help

I'm experiencing almost similar symptoms. Generator starts and will run 30 or so seconds and dies. So far I've replaced the fuel pump + controller board + plugs. I've also tried to disconnect wire #85 to see if it's one of the sensors and still no joy. Please someone help me .... I'm going nuts trying to figure this out.

Just so I have the sequence down....it was running fine two weeks ago then started to develop stop/start problems. Then, you replaced the fuel pump, controller board and plugs?

Also, if you lifted the #85 wire you took the safety's out of the equation. That leaves the control board (which you replaced) and the primary wire to the distributor and coil. I have seen broken wires also cause the stop/start issue. If you can get it running, tug on the primary (12v) wires from the control board to the distributor and to the coil. A broken wire or bad connector will usually shut the engine down when you pull on it. Depending on access, you can also use a DVOM with the engine off to check the wires and connectors. I know it is a pain.....but if you hire a mechanic....this is what they would do next given the parts you replaced.

Thanks again for the help. The couple of pieces that I have NOT checked. First one is the fuel solenoid on the carb --- if that goes bad, would it cause it to have the symtoms that I'm experiencing? Also, I haven't checked the fuel filter.....

BTW, I am fairly mechanical... built mustangs with superchargers, installed transmissions, etc. So I feel pretty comfortable navigating around. Just frustrating because this sucker ran just fine and one day --- poof it didn't.

Just so you know, I had one too before I finally got fed up with it and bought a Westerbeke. That is the only reason I know those things inside and out. Usually the major fail points are the fuel pump and controller board.

The fuel solenoid can go bad but frankly I haven't seen one fail. You have the skills necessay to solve it. It isn't the safetys shutting it down if you pull the 85 wire unless it is an overspeed condition. An overspeed condition will shut it down and that is usually caused by a bad governor. That seems unlikely because it has been running well.

That leaves you with the basics of fuel and spark. The control board manages both.

It just seems like a fuel problem if it starts and runs for 30 seconds. If it was the control board......it wouldn't start. You can put a fuel pressure gauge on after the pump and see what the pressure is. Also, rebuilding the carb may find debris in the fuel bowl.

Only reason I mentioned the fuel solenoid is because , I thought previously before this issue, when turning on/off I heard a clicking of sorts like it was sorta priming up the fuel line but no longer hear that. I thought that it might not be the fuel solenoid but honestly I'm so frustrated now and although i know throwing $$$ won't necessarily fix it...but I am trying to get myself a baseline of sorts. I've had the boat for about a year and want to get it to where I know everything that has or hasn't been done. For instance, next season at the beginning i'm replacing all the plugs, wires, distributors, etc on the main engines not becuase I have to but to ensure I know where things stand.

BTW, the previous owner had a Mr. Gasket 12S fuel pump on the boat and it wasn't mounted properly. It really was a ghetto setup. I used the replacement pump that belongs on the boat.

I know I'm venting... this generator is a real pain in the !$##!$#!$#!#$ LOL. It reminds me of an electrical issue I once had when wiring up two MSD-4's for my Blown284. Now I remember why I got out of racing :)

We had the same issue with our quicksilver. It would run for 30 seconds and then die. Ours would surge sometimes before it died. We took the carburetor off and it was pretty crapped up. We thought we had solved the problem. It kept happening. We replace the carburetor and fuel lines with a new ones and it purred like a kitten. We used it for two weeks and the generator ran great but now when I turn the switch on at the main electric panel it won't show any amps. Then it will jump and show too many amps and shut down. I am assuming the shutdown is due to the amps being too high. Anyone else had this issue? We thought fixing the carburetor had solved everything. We had a mechanic look at it but he had no clue. He thinks it is electrical and may have something to do with the brushes. I only have 700 hours on this thing. Help!!
