Does anybody know what the difference is between the different lubricants / greases that Quicksilver sells? I'm looking for actual knowledge on the difference, not just "I use generic marine grease", or "they want you to buy their product", etc. Also, I can read the titles so I can guess that 2-4-C has teflon and that Gimbal bearing grease was designed for Gimbal bearings.

I was looking for more technical information such as... one is rated for higher temperatures, or this one contains graphites for higher load weights, etc.

Below are the lubricants and Mercruisers description from http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/lubricants-c62.html

  • 2-4-C Lubricant with Teflon A high quality multi-purpose lubricant to withstand extreme friction and also providing added water resistance. Can NOT be used on needle bearings or other internal engine parts
  • Special 101 Lubricant A high quality multi-purpose lubricant to withstand extreme friction and also providing added water resistance. Can NOT be used on needle bearings or other internal engine parts.
  • Engine Coupler Spine Grease For use on all MerCruiser sterndrive applications
  • U-Joint & Gimbal Bearing Grease For MerCruiser sterndrive applications
  • Anti-Corrosion Grease Not for use on ball, roller, or needle bearings

I'd like to understand the differences and is there one or two that would suit all applications? As you can see, some of the descriptions are the same and the manual often says you can several different types. I don't know of any other applications that needs so many different types of greases.

This link may provide some value. I regularly buy all of the grease you have listed and use as specified in the service manual. I personally choose not to roll the dice when we are talking about a sleeve of lube under $20. If you do stumble across the technical differences I would love to read the information. It is not likely to change my maint habits.

So not paying attention to my grease in my grease gun, I put some generic marine grease that i usually use on my trailer bearings in to the gimble bearing grease spot. After reading this, how worried should I be about mixing grease types (possibly/probably)? I figure that I'll probably get the bellows replaced next season, and doing that is really the only way to get grease out and replace it. Grease is better then no grease, so long as there isn't a chemical reaction with the two.. but... what do you think?

2-4-c is like the generic of Mercury grease and is used in alot of areas that are highly maintained.
101 grease is more for the saltwater apllication and will almost always stay on the propshaft as to were 2-4-c will wash off over time.
u-joint and gimbal grease are to stand up to heat and grab on to the metal portions.
engine coupler spline grease is only used for your coupler and drive splines and is a high pressure grease that wears out fast.
never mix greases unless thay are meant for the same purpose
