My raw water pump for a bravo 3 us leaking water into the bilge from behind the pulley... Will this stop if the engine is not running or do I need to pull the boat now? Can I remove it will the boat is on the water?

Jonathan,

It's been way too many years since I messed with one, but if my memory serves me right there should be a hose going from the BIII drive to the water pump, which sits on the engine (not inside the drive like in Alpha drives). I changed my impeller while I had the boat on the trailer, but i don't see why you can't clamp the hose or plug it with something and just change the pump without pooling the boat. I would do just that. Don't panic. I doubt that bad impeller will sink your boat.

Engines been off for about 10 minutes now and its still leaking into the bilge pretty steady should I just go for it and pull it?

Jonathan
can you pull that hose off the pump and raise it above the water-line. If yes, you can service the pump without pulling the boat. On my previous boat I had cut into that hose and put a ball valve shut off.

The water is coming from the intake hose from the drive. Get the tools to control that hose and you'll be fine. IF you have no tools the firstling that comes to mind is get a good rag and stuff in to the hose. But, you'll have to take the hose off.

Be prepared that when the hose is off it'll shoot water in at much greater rate. It'll continue until you stuff the rag in it and tape on top.

Another way, really simple, just like the garden hose, just bend that hose in two spots (make it look like Z) and the water stops. Tape the hose while it's kinked and you'll have the time to change the pump.

Ours not leaking from the hose its leaking out of the shaft were it meets the pulley. Does this mean I need a new pump it can I rebuild this one with the impeller kit. In going into the bilge and attempting I'll b back

The hose from the drive to the pump is a reinforced hose with wire inside - very thick and probably not "kink-able." If you can raise the disconnected end above the water line and bungee it up there, the flow will stop. You can also purchase a set of wooden plugs (ever boat should have a set aboard) and jam it in there. If it's leaking from the shaft, your pump is maybe shot. It could be running down along the shaft but originating elsewhere.

Ron, I doubt he has these plug handy, but no question this would be the tool to control that hose.

IMO, the fasted emergency tool he might have is the rag and some duck tape, electrical tape or any kind of tape to hold the rag in place. The idea is to get control on the incoming water and then do proper diagnoses whether it's the impeller or the pump housing or both.

Jonathan, I hope your bilge pump is in working order.

Thanks guys for the quick respond. Pump is out hose is above water level with a rag stuffed in it so I hope all is well.I know my bilge pump is working because its the reason I looked into the bilge.it pumped out 2x while I was cleaning so I opened her up and saw the pump leaking. The hoses and back of pump were dry the Watter is coming from the shaft at the pulley end. Guess its time for a me pump?

With the hose end SECURED above the water line you will be fine. Just make sure it is secured. As for the pump sounding like a box of Cherieos, Yikes! Take it apart on the bench but it sounds like a new one is in order. Mine (98), failed when the pulley itself failed. It was plastic! I couldn't believe it. Anyhow the pulley cracked for whatever reason & threw the belt. I replaced it with a metal one & was good to go.

500 for a new pump?!?! Craziness lol well the hole in the water just keeps on gettin bigger well thanks again everybody I won't c her for 3 days with no pump in hopefully it's still floating when I get back...

I think I paid $96 for new housing and impeller back when I had my 240DA. $500 is a bit too much, but I guess they're taking advantage of being in pick of the season and you not having much choice, unless you do it yourself.

jonathan, did you try freeport marine? they usually stock the pumps and local

Alex, if his pump is fried, he needs the pump, not just the housing. That is a very expensive item.

If the part is 46-807151A9 it's $336.29 at B0ATF1X.COM. If it's A8 it's $516.35.

Jonathan, you probably have the seawater pump that doubles as a fuel pump. At some point in the mid to late 1990s, GM switched completely to fuel injection, while Merc did not. As a result, there was no longer a place on the block for a mechanical fuel pump. So Merc designed this stupid fuel pump which is part of the seawater pump. There's a very specific and important maintenance spec on this pump b/c you have to change a couple of oz of outdrive oil inside the pump... or something like that. Anyway, if you have the seawater pump that is more simple (the one that doesn't double as a fuel pump) you have the less expensive, less complicated pump.

I ordered the pump last night 340 with shipping. I did go to Freeport marine they wanted 500. Crazy people. But its not a fuel pump also. Simple 3 nuts and 2 hoses thank God. I'm just worried about those hoses being disconnected and me not being near my boat for 3 days.

Oh yea pump is cooked I took the hosting apart and a hand full if ball bearings feel out and the shaft is scored and discolored.yet another lie from the brokerage.. Yea sea water pump replaced last season..boat max City island don't ever go there. They also just painted 6 inches of the water line put me inn the water and said they painted the while bottom pulled it out when I realized they didn't change my final and universal via purchase agreement. That's when u saw the bottom paint. There thieves well anyway thanks again everybody

Jon
Unusual for that pump to go. Be sure to check the belt and make sure it's lined up properly. That's what may have caused the bearings to go. Is the belt in good shape? Any fraying, etc?

Good point on the belt, Ron. I would replace it as I'm sure it wasn't done in recent years.

Sorry guys was out shaking all day didn't have Internet but anyway The belt looks fairly new no rot or cuts or frays. I have a brand new spare that I wil install when I put the new pump in. What would be the best way to check the belt alignment?
