on a mercruiser 7.4 mpi is it normal for the right side of engine the riser/elbow to be just warm and then on the left side the riser is hot? I ran the engine today and the temp stayed around 168 degrees and when I check the engine that is what I found.

thanks

You should be able to hold your hand on the top of the risers when the engine is running without getting burned. When were they last changed? Its a wear item and you need manifolds and risers aprox. every five years. If one is hotter is prob. partly blocked inside.
Also, the guys here will ask you to post all data for your boat when posting.

It is not normal. You need to pull the elbows and risers for an inspection.

Do you need to replace the manifolds as well? I can understand the risers, but provided there is not a corrision issue do you have to replace the manifolds?

It depends upon the physical condition. You can only tell the condition by tearing them apart.

Likely if we are talkin about raw water cooled.

Remember B.O.A.T (bring over another thousand) for OEM parts.

This is kind of scary, every five years? A friend of mine just had his done on a 2000 330DA. His bill for risers, manifolds and labor was over 8 thousand, most of which was labor. That was for one engine. I’m betting he should have done the other one at the same time.

On another board I was asking about replacing them. I was told parts $650 installation 4 hours. I'll probably end up doing them myself this winter. 4 x $90 = $360 for labor.

$8K Sounds very high for one engine. I had mine done in 2004 on my old boat(5.7L in a 230OV) and it was around $3k, but included some other crap(Y-Pipe replacement, new flappers). They had to remove the engine so most of it was labor too.
I don't need risers and manifolds yet on this boat(they were inspected while the motor was out replacing the O/D in Jan, but was quoted $1800 including labor to do them.

I thought the same thing, he did have some other work done, but it was minor, the props were removed and re-conditioned. They did not have to remove the engine on this boat.

O.M.G. thank heaven I do it myself.
I cant afford that eight grand!!! really? .

I had one side hotter than the other on my boat and when the thermostat got a piece of trash in it that caused it to stick open I found the problem. There are hoses from the thermostat housing to the risers, there are spring loaded check balls in the tubes for the hoses and one was stuck, I removed the trash from the thermostat, freed up the balls and all ran well after. So while checking things see if your cooling system is set up that way.
