Is there a law in florida regarding estimates on boat repair?

What do you mean? Like with a car where you have to sign the estimate before they can proceed?

This is not regarding an insurance claim but a repair order done by MM.

To answer barryg, yes, but with boats.

That is a good question. I'll ask a friend of mine that is a boater and an attorney to check into it. With cars down here, anything over $50.00 they are supposed to provide you with a written estimate for your signature...It would make sense to do the same with boats. I know when I had my Doral, the dealer was great and would always let me know once they checked out the boat what the damages were going to be; usually faxing to my office a revised estimate to include parts & labor.

Did MM not do that for you?

When ever I've taken my boat into the MM in Pompano, Florida they have taken my list of repairs and then prepared detailed estimates, fully proced. They have returned to me any old parts as well. I do not know about the law, but that has been their dealings with me. Now, in the heat of repair when an issue is encountered that can not be completed within the estimate they will call for approval.

They did not call for approval and only went ahead with the repairs based on the assumption that I would approve. I only told them to look at the generator and to fix any issues that are under warranty. The subcontractor failed to call MM (this is what MM says) and advised them of the diagnosis of the situation and repaired the genny. I am being stuck with a big bill by MM that I do not want to pay.

yea, but they did fix a problem you had so I would guess you'd have to put it behind you (IE. pay up). You can't get it unfixed and they certainly would not entertain compensating the work for you... if they did, I'd be totally amazed...

with an '07 how is it not under warranty? Was it not a factory product? If not, can you explain more of the details. I work as a service manager so you may have some info that I can understand and help you to produce at least some sort of negotion to alleviate your bill

A/C Power Plus who was subcontracted by MM to perform the work said the impeller was burned up and siphon break was blown.

so sounds like those aren't warrantble conditions and I assume it overheated ?
What did they fix?
Have them give you a breakdown parts and labor. Then come up with a reasonable offer. i.e. Pay for parts + half of labor, stating that you did not authorize a repair but diagnosis only. If you had this info prior to them proceeding what would you do. If it's a $2000.00 that is a lot of money to come up with if you weren't expecting it. But if you were expecting a completely warranted repair. they owe you something for sure since they proceeded with out going over the situation.

I checked with the warranty that came with it and those items are not covered under warranty. I will have to call MM to get an itemized list of cost for this repair. If I was told of the diagnosis and how much it would cost, I would have atleast tried to do it myself since I know how to swap out the impeller but for siphon break, I dont mind getting my hands dirty and learn a thing or two. I was expecting a repair to be covered by warranty. I will be talking to MM service manager in the middle of this week to discuss this. Hope it turns out to be a misunderstanding.

either way, best of luck. I hope it works out in your favor

My experience with MM was that they tell you for example: your 100 hour service runs about $800 and up.The problem is "and up" could be substantial and you are not told before the work is done how much it will wind up costing you until you get there and BAM you get hit with a juicy invoice. Granted, the work had to get done, but as a consumer we must be told beforehand what the total will be before any work gets done. One suggestion could be to do what the car mechanics do, charge you for a diagnostic and if you use them to do the work then they apply that diagnostic fee paid to lower your bill.
I feel pappo' pain, not literally. Now pappo could the damage come as a result of the accident you had ,maybe you could run it thru the insurance?

Hey Papo...

I'm not sure how you slip this noose ... you probably signed a work authorization some where in the hand off of the boat that didn't clearly state "For Warrantee repair only".

I think a sit down with the Service manager is of course in order. State your case plainly and with out anger. At the end the discussion make it clear you can not afford their bill and ask for relief and give them a number you can pay. See where it goes.

Good Luck
