Question on Windlass Anchors

I just purchased my first boat last year, a 2001 Sea ray 260DA, 26 foot. I'm looking for a reasonably priced and long lasting windlass for my boat. I have looked and read about Lewmar, Anchor lift, Aster, Quick and others and I'm confused. One thing I do know, is that I'm looking for a vertical windless, because it looks better, just my choice, not to offend any horizontal windlass users. Can anyone give me their opinion and experience on their choice of windless to help me out? Thanks in advance....

Hi Boat boy,
I fitted a Quick vertical to my 230 which was a rope and chain set up. It was a great winch with plenty of grunt.
A few things to look out for are retrieval speed, max pulling power and price. If you go with a reputable manufacturer you can't go wrong.
Run the recommended cable size or bigger and allow for enough fall in your locker and it's a great addition to any boat.

This is what I put on my 260. It's a Lewmar V700. It's an entry-level to mid-grade windlass, but size-wise it's more than sufficient for this size boat (and I use a 22lb anchor). It's not a small job to do this (properly). One of the things you'll need to do (among many) is fill the hawse pipe hole since the windlass will have a new hole that is slightly to port. Check the condition of the plywood under the anchor locker deck. Mine was soaked and starting to rot in places from not enough sealant used on the deck hardware. I had to replace that before doing anything else.

Thank you, I like the sea deck on your boat, saw it at the AC Boat show. How do you ever remove it when it wears out? Was thinking of doing it also, but thought it would be too much to clean up from the black underneath.

This isn't Seadeck. This is Plasdeck and I glued it down permanently. It should never wear out. It's much more robust than the foam stuff - it is solid, rather than light and foamy. It's actually made up of individual strips, just like real teak would be. Although it is a PVC based material, any stains that can't be gotten out the normal way (which would probably be 99.9%) can actually be sanded out.
