Question on hailing port

I think the only time to Document your boat is if your boating on the Great Lakes or Oceans , I have several friends that are documented here on the chain o lakes and all they do is get harrassed from the local Sherriffs for no numbers , My opinion is really worth the hassel and agrivation of being stopped every weekend ?No Thanks

Let me see;

After initial processing no fees for annual renewal.

On boats that are large enough to document the ability to finance because of the additional security Documentation affords a potential lender?

Being able to tell Barney Fife he is a moron, and being right - PRICELESS!

Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I have to agree with Henry on this one for all of the reasons he stated plus many lenders will require the vessel to be documented as a condition for financing. I bought my boat brand new and I had it documented and I'm nowhere near big water. We took a short term loan but documenting wasn't a condition -- I just like the idea of paying for it once and not having to pay annual renewals. I'm on a very busy and very popular lake and I've never been stopped or harassed for not having numbers in the 3 years I've owned this boat.

Agreed... Almost none of the law enforcement local registration authorities will know anything about CG documentation.

Unless you are dealing with Barney Fife, your local authorities have seen enough documented boats to know what it's about. I can't that imagine a water patrol authority who wouldn't know about vessel documentation.

LOL well Illinois is every 2 years for renewal plus a waterway fee also , , $180 a year for the Fox water way fee and , not sure what the state registration was , but i see you all are cheaping out stateing that you dont have annual renewal fees , great , good for you , but I dont care if you have a Barney on your lake or not , If I had a Doc. vessel I would still put Registration numbers on it , Maybe on your body of water the 5 0 are relaxxed, HERE they are NOT , and I do not want to take chances being stopped for something stupid, being boarded and harrassed

I would have to look up the statute, but in VA, it's on or the other. State registration numbers OR documentation. Never both. Both gets you in trouble.

Don't you still have to deal with the DMV even if you do not put on the visible numbers? For anyone who has a trailered vessel, I recommend having state registration numbers (ugly as they are) as many law enforcement types on inland lakes are not accustomed to seeing boats without them and you will get checked out so I prefer to just put them on.

My boat will never get trailered, or leave the ocean, at least not while I own it, so that is not an issue for me. CA exempts CG Documented vessels from DMV registration.

+1 to all these, getting my loan was a wicked easy snap with the CG paperwork. And I even changed the name of the boat and hailing port too. Still like hittin the easy button with the bank. Here in coastal water of CA half or more of the boats are documented so you don't run into marine patrol or sheriffs who would harass you for no numbers.
