Question of the day? Engines

5.0 L fuel injected 260HP
or
5.7 L Carb 300HP

Looking for advice on which to go with to power a 1990 24' 220DA. Both seem to be around the same price range. Is fuel injection a huge advantage?
Suggestions?

to answer your question, since nobody di so far, I would go with the MPI engine. All around a nicer package and more fuel efficient. Also has a better torque curve, albeit not more torque than the carb'd engine.
That being said, I am not sure who is offering a 300hp carb'd 350?? Merc and Volvo sure don't.

Sure I would love to go with diesel, unfortunately if I did that I would have twice as much $$ in the boat as what the boat would even be worth. No, I have to stick with gas. I have not seen a complete drop in diesel package for less than around $15-18K. If anyone knows different, please please let me know.

Marine Power engines (by them) are rated for a 5.7 at 315 carb, 325 MPI HP. I posted earlier if anyone had any experience with Marine Power engines because the cost/HP rating is attractive for a 5.7L. Got no responses so I have to believe they are not very popular with the crowd.
Keep em coming.

Hmmmm............

I have to say that I love the no-hassle starts and reliability of my current MPI. However, the "dinosaur" in me completely understood the carb on my previous boat, and I could practically rebuild it in my sleep. (Gotta love Holleys!!) I have an instinctive distrust of non-mechanical stuff, but then, I freely admit my impending status as a full-fledged fossil.

Seriously, unless you're an unreconstructed gearhead like me, you're probably better off with the MPI. Pay no attention to this grumpy old guy's anti-technology rant.

I'll shut up now..........

I am very mechanically motivated where engines and carbs are concerned. I have heard different things about carbs on boats which mostly is due to boats sitting and not being used.
My other thoughts are that a 5.0L 260HP MPI will probably be much more efficient than a 5.7L 250HP carb engine which are both similar in price. For some extra dollars I can get a 5.7L 300 HP carb engine but again, efficiency and longevity of the engine itself, just trying to weigh all the options out there.
Keep the info coming. Would love to hear from those who have these engines and what their thoughts are.

considerations:

i've had both - OLD carb engines (7.4s in this boat and a 3.7L 4 cyl merc I/O in my 1988 regal). cold starts are tricky with my 89, hot starts were a BIG problem in my regal (vapor lock). you are talking about a NEW carb engine so i would imagine there wont be any problems with starting (cold or hot). that being said, you couldnt beat the performance and economy of my 2002 crownline's Merc 350 Mag Horizon! that was a sweet engine. given a choice, i'd go with FI!

I'm not sure which is the better choice but I think either way I'd be looking for fresh water cooling instead of raw water. We had a choice between a 7.4L and a 5.7L 250 HP,both with about 250 hours. We're closing tomorrow on the 5.7L. It was the fresh water cooling that sold us.

Given a name brand (Merc or Volvo) I would buy a fuel injected engine every time. But with an unknown (to me) brand, I'd get a carb. Any marine mechanic or shop will be able to service a Merc or Volvo injected engine or a carbed engine. But who can service a Marine Power fuel injection system?
