Question about Compression testing

I agree. I don't see where a compression issue would be causing this. If you don't have one, get a laser thermometer and check manifold and elbow temps. But I agree with Dennis....sounds like an impeller.

The manis and bows were extremely hot to the touch after I noticed the temp gauge was over 200* I know that is not as accurate as a laser but I think I'll pick one up anyway cause one can never have enough cool tools!!!!

I can't believe how often I use my laser thermometer. We even used it to check the surface temp of my slip neighbor's Dalmatian. In the sun the black spots were 40 degrees hotter that the white area.

I digress.... If the manifolds and elbows are hot the cooling water is not getting through them. Its either not coming in (impeller) or not getting out. (exhaust) Your boat is 20 years old and if they have never been changed, or not changed in the last 5-10 years, you are way overdue. Since the impeller is newer I think this is where you problems lie. Its a pretty easy repair on you engine. The hard part is spending the money.

so I removed the thermostat on my baby and its a 140* thermostat that has a born on date of 09/94 and my baby is a '95 so I guess it's possible that it's the original thermostat???

How did it look? Remember, the water is not moving through the motor. Replacing the thermostat is a pretty cheap fix. But if its 20 years old and you can read the specs it might be OK. Change it and see what happens.

For the cost of a stat, I certainly wouldn't put an old one back in, but for giggle you can test it to see if it was functioning properly: Suspend the stat with a string into a pot of water on the stove. Turn the heat on, and using a thermometer, note the temperature that the stat starts to open at and the temp that it appears fully open at.

it looked OK but I'm gonna change it, any special trick to getting that sleeve out?? I don't want to just grab and pull .............

I agree!! any tips on how to get the sleeve off?? and yes the curious side of me plans to test the old stat and yes I have my fingers crossed that that was my running hot issue

Carefully

Tap it, twist it, whatever - just enough to break it free. Take pictures so you remember how things go back together. Don't forget to replace the gasket, scrape the mating surfaces clean with a blade and don't use any sealant. But, knowing that plastic is also likely 20 years old, I would put a new one in.

good point

so I got the new 140* thermostat, upper gasket, lower gasket, "o" ring and plastic sleeve in (the old plastic sleeve actually came off in one piece, though I did not reuse it) and swapped into the thermostat housing and back on my baby. Ran her on the muffs and she held 149* on the oem Faria gauge but I have to take her on the water so that I can test her at speed.

I still have to boil my old thermostat to see what temp if any that it opens at. Will update this post when I water test and boil the old thermostat.

Of course it is raining in the great Garden State!!!

Best of luck, hopefully that did it!

Raining here in TN as well, has been raining all week long - gave up on going boating today, smoking some ribs on the smoker - consolation smoke lol...

so I took my baby out today as it was beautiful out, we spent the entire day out on the water but we could not go faster than 1500 RPMs could take us because she would begin running hot. So we just putted around. If I kept the engine speed at or under 1500 RPMs she would hold steady at 150* on the OEM Faria temp gauge however as soon as I accelerated any faster than 1500 RPMs the temps would start climbing. So I've already done the impeller and the thermostat so I guess its on to check the manifolds and risers for cholesterol ......................................

and whaddya know, the exhaust risers are all clogged up good, major metal cholesterol (wish I could post pix). The manifolds look good and thick and sooty (no water intrusion). I will keep updating this post through multiple successful high speed runs incase someone in the future can benefit from this post. Thanks to all who have helped and contributed.

That's the thing about salt water use. It corrodes everything everywhere fast. Dang shame.

Not sure how fast the pieces corroded as the boat's 20 year old and the OP wasn't sure if or when the manifold andhrisers were changed.

sorry to do this to you; but if the prior owner was being truthful, and based on the condition of the boat I have no reason to doubt him, it has always been a lake boat ................

OK I think we can close this thread now as I was able to get to the lake today and my baby performed flawlessly, the OEM Faria gauge read between approx. 148* and 150* consistently all day long, it was beautiful out and I had zero issues ................ sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you to all who contributed to this thread and helped me to get my baby up and running properly!!

Interestingly the July 2015 BoatUS newsletter (volume 33 #3) has an article on "manifold life" that has a pix of a manifold that could double for the condition of the riser that was on my boat.
