QSC 600s or Qsm 11s??
Hello CSR! I've googled and searched around looking for information related to the maintenance regimen for the QSM11s. The boat I am looking at has about 850 hours and light maintenance records. From the available records, it appears routine maintenance has been performed but none of the major stuff such as valve adjustments or anything to address heat exchanger or aftercooler maintenance. Trying to determine what should have and needs to be done now and at 1000hrs or so and approximate cost$. Do the heat exchangers and aftercoolers need to be rebuilt after a certain hour mark? What does this cost? I've read plenty about the over propping and need to inspect for exhaust manifold leakage which I hope would be caught in the diesel survey.

Looking for feedback on what upcoming costs I should expect and what should have been addressed by the previous owner. Might need to start from a baseline.

Many thanks!

What model boat? The QSM11's have different service recommendations based on use, commercial vs recreational if I remember correctly.

If you are starting from base line the usual is recommended, impellers, oil change, zincs, after cooler cleaning, etc.

The over propping and associated manifold issues are real. I'm on my 3rd set of props and after about $15K I've finally got it all dialed in per Cummins and Tony Athens guidelines for the GPH and RPMs.

There is really no such thing as a 1000 hour major service. The cooling system on a QSM 11 should be serviced every three years or 1500 hours, whichever comes first. If the boat is in salt water and is more than four or five years old, it is well past due for this service. A delay in service can result in the need to replace the after cooler. My single QSC 8.3 cost $5,000 for a cooling system service completed last year.

You’ll be much further ahead posting your question(s) over on boatdiesel.com. There’s a ton of knowledge shared on these engines - and most other makes/models.

That being said, I had QSM-11’s in my 520DB. I’ll say they were pretty low-cost maintenance wise, until the exhaust manifold gaskets start to leak. Take a close look at the engines you’re considering. They are painted white for a reason. If you see what appears to be black dust (soot) on the block where the exhaust manifold bolts on, you’ll know these need to be taken care of. It’s a pretty big (and expensive) repair. Some leak so bad there’s soot everywhere in the engine space.
