So I'm new to the group... I love my 290 Amberjack but its time to move up because the Admiral wants more space and I want Diesels! Hopefully I can get some advice here. I'm a hobbyist mechanic, but my expertise ends past the dipstick and the wiring harness. We are looking at a 390DA with 700h QSB 380's and in one of the pictures the stbd turbo looks like it has gotten hot enough to fry all the paint, the port motor does not have the same look. My questions- is it normal? what could have done that if not? is it a walk away issue? I really appreciate anyone's advice. Obviously I'll get a complete motor survey before buying but I'm looking for a bit of insight before spending that $

I dont need a QSB to say that something does not look right. That burn is on a water cooled jacket and it needed to get plenty hot before it burnt. That engine was run long and hard (maybe had a coolant problem??). I'd start asking lots of questions to find the back story.

Why do they look so different? (Other than the charred areas) The accessories attached on the stb side of each and forward appear very different to me. Has one been worked on quite a bit already? Maybe it's an optical illusion (and I know just this side of nothing about those motors), but they don't look even close to matched engines.

I think it is the angle of the picture and some shading that is throwing it off. I see a lot of what you are saying though.
The black crankcase filter looks different, but after a second look, the stbd is not fully horizontal, its twisted on the hoses some.
The port coolant tank seemed to have a glare that is throwing it off too.
