I am gluing on a PVC registration number plate on my PVC Zodiac.
Can I use PVC Plumbing cement or should I use the Polymarine PVC inflatable boat cement that you can buy at west marine?

PVC plumbing cement is a solvent type cement meaning it partially dissolves the surfaces of the PVC it comes in contact with and fuses it together. It works particularly well with pipe joints due to the tight fit of the joints. It will not work as well joining two flat surfaces. If you try it you will want to clamp them together or apply some pressure in some way until it sets.

I just did this , you need the two part glue sold at WM it works great, just mask off anything you don't want glue on because it turns brown in a few days. (Poly marine) make sure it says for PVC they make one for Hypalon also.

I got the Zodiac dealer to paint the numbes on. Worked well, still there and looking good no idea what paint he used. It was in 1996 and do not remember how much I paid.

I ordered 5 tubes of glue on eBay for the same price as one from west marine. Same stuff and it comes in handy for patching other water toys.

For repair of PVC based inflatables, you should really find out about the process and the chemicals involved. Successful patches require a serious regimen to be followed:

I did significant repairs on our Zodiac and everything has held well for over a year.

This is the procedure i followed, and as you see is recomended by the manufacturer: BoatNumberPlate.com

Inflatable Boat/RIB Boat Number & Name Plate Installation Instructions

PVC Plate Gluing Instructions

For best results, be sure to fully read and understand the instructions prior to installing your plates.

Materials Needed:
Available at local marine supply store (Boater’s World, West Marine) or Home Center (Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace).
1. MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) or Acetone.
2. Clean rags
3. Masking tape
4. Nitrile gloves
5. Stiff Bristle Paint Brush.

Available only at local marine supply store (Boater’s World, West Marine, etc.)
6. PVC Adhesive. We recommend Polymarine Brand One Part Inflatable Boat PVC Adhesive, West Marine ITEM #492556, Boater’s World #365540152, or any similar one or two part marine pvc adhesive.

How to Install the Plate: Can be applied Inflated or Deflated.

1. Install your plate away from direct sunlight, humidity less than 70%, temperature 65-77F.
2. Mask off the area where the plate is to be applied to help prevent getting MEK/Acetone and adhesive on the areas where the plate will not be applied
3. Scrub the surface of the boat and the back of the plate with MEK/Acetone applied to a clean rag. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the safe use of the MEK/Acetone. For proper adhesion the areas must be thoroughly cleaned and free of any old glue or other foreign material.
NOTE: Acetone evaporates much faster than MEK.
To ensure proper cleaning, work in smaller areas and dampen rag more often.

4. Wait 10 minutes.
5. If necessary, a second cleaning may be required to ensure the areas are thoroughly cleaned. Wait 10 minutes.
NOTE: Steps 6-12 are designed for the use of Polymarine One Part Inflatable Boat PVC Adhesive. If another adhesive is used, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper use.

6. Using a stiff bristled brush, brush a thin layer of adhesive to the boat area and the back of the plate. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the safe use of the adhesive.
7. Allow 20 minutes for the layer to dry.
8. Brush a second thin layer of adhesive to the boat area and the back of the plate.
9. Wait 2-3 minutes and apply the plate. Start from one edge and slowly lay the plate onto the glued area.
10. With the palm of your hand, firmly rub the plate starting from the center to the edges to ensure all air bubbles are removed and a good bond is achieved.
11. Wait at least 48 hours before use to ensure the adhesive is properly cured.
12. Your plate is now installed and ready for use.
