Purchase 1993 400EC?

I was always told that if I go from a trailer boat (we do have a slip) to a "slip only" 30+ to raise my budget to $10,000 a year for haul out, slip, service, etc. $400 a month does not even address those costs. At $400 a month budget, stay with a single engine 27ft boat......JMHO. Diesel is a whole other world for long distance cruising with fuel costs well over $400 a month to be practical, Mike.

John, aren't you taking the surveyor with you on the sea trials? when I bought my boat, the surveyor spent a good amount of time in the engine room while we were underway, I think the only device he had was an infrared thermometer to point at the engines. JMHO, if your strapping your budget, you are taking a chance with the diesels because they cost so much to fix, I could drop a 454 in my boat for about a tenth of the price of a diesel, aren't they about 60 grand new? for me, once I had the larger boat, I spend more time at the dock, or just putz out to the lake and turn it off (aside from an ocassional 300 mile ride the the Islands and back) or a 40 mile jaunt.. 454's will push a 40 footer, especially the newer engines.

oh yea, I never see black smoke from my truck unless it's not running right and I stomp on it, but that's fixed now, I don't know about boat diesels

Hi John, I'm really enjoying your thread, thanks.. you know, you probaby wouldn't want a dinasour boat like mine, but ya could pick one up for about 30k or maybe less, they are huge inside and very comfortable, I have a spring loaded futon mattress on top of the regular mattress and I swear it's the most comfortable place I've ever slept..

Still going....seatrials earlier this week, engines run very well, one of them needs an aftercooler rebuilt. A few minor hull blemishes, not in bad shape otherwise.

WOT at 3000rpm she runs 200 rpm over manuf specs on both engines. At 2400 rpm she cruises quite nicely at about 23 knots with a fuel burn rate right at 20gph total for both 6BTs.

We did bring both a surveyor and Cummins engine tech on trials, they both thought she was well maintained, just needs a little attention here and there.

Trying to settle on a purchase price now, this may take a day or two.

Thanks, we just made a final offer of $68.5K, however I think he's probably expecting more.

Looks like we'll have plenty of time this winter to watch and wait...

FWIW a guy at our yacht club last week bought a 1996 40EC with gassers for 29k. 2 years ago a 1993 40EC with Cat 3116's at our yacht club sold for 38k. Just goes to show how soft market is. Your 68.5k offer sounds really good and the seller should be happy with it.

Seem like amazing deals...happens when people need to unload their boats and don't need the money or are at the mercy of the yard looking at an expensive repair bill becauuse, they dont have the knowledge to do anything themselves.
I wouldn't expect to find such great deals as the norm.

I agree $68.5 is a very reasonable number to wait on.

keep us posted.

congrats ,change your info from boatless to now on regal site.

We originally started looking at two older 400ECs. We didn't like the interior condition and hours on the running gear on the boats that we saw, then we stumbled upon the Regal. She is in top condition for her age. To be honest with you we liked the interior layout better than the 400ECs that we looked at as well. It fit our needs better, we prefer an aft cabin over a mid-cabin bunk.

If the owner hadn't accepted our offer our next look see would have been a 440 up in Annapolis and a couple of 340s. After looking at 40 footers I'm not sure we would have stepped down to a 34/35 foot boat. We did see several 370s, one of which we liked, however in the end the extra space of the 40 foot boat and nice running diesels made the decision for us.

Regardless it's been a fun experience and yes sadly we'll be moving to the Regal forum website. Again, thanks for the feedback.

Regards, John
