Just got off the phone with marina. They pulled the boat yesterday and said everything looked great........then just before she hung up she said there was a note that one of the scegs was missing. Really.... Anyone ever have this situation? I am 2 hrs away so a friend of mine is going to be at the marina today and is going to lay eyes on it for me. I think that the scag is sacrificial to protect the prop. I don't remember hitting anything and the boat ran fine. ????

Don't know what a scag is on an inboard? We have skegs on sterndrives.

The good news is the article I just read says it's stainless and removable! Maybe it dropped off and did not damage the props. Like an IO out-drive, it probably works fine without one there. Being stainless it would not just rot away like aluminum, Mike.

Anything stainless steel below the water line is not sacrificial. That being said, the skeg serves two purposes, first to protect the prop/prop set, second to provide steerage at low rpm. On the Mercury pod drive it appears that the skeg is a bolt on item. On outboards and sterndrives it is cast into the drive housing. Its possible the fasteners backed off and it just fell off. If thats the case, the OP should take it up with SR as a warranty issue. Since this sounds like a surprise, my guess it was some kind of fastener failing. I was on a buddy's Whaler Outrage 370 when he clipped a rock with one of the 250 hp Verados. There was no missing that contact had been made.

Contact your selling dealer - Merc had an issue with the press pins on the skegs and issued a service bulletin with an update. Easy fix

B- it's not a big deal, but the notice from Merc actually came out last winter, and your dealer only had to order you a new set no charge and replace them (easy install). df

"So, I take it that wasn't her in the banned pic...

If my first wife looked like that we might still be married! No, it was not her in that banned pic.

Mercury Marine is going to replace both scegs and install them with the proper pins and they are also using adhesive to secure them. Thanks R.H. for your help. What a guy.

You are very welcome Mr. Black

This is not an advertising site nor am I doing such a thing other than to say that one day I wish to write a book about how I see all of you through my employee's eyes. Each one has his or her unique story and some are pretty dang cool. So without making a commercial here I will say on this gentleman's post that if I were to want an American made car from an American company called Ford, and if I were in or near the state of Ohio....Mr. Brad Black is the man I would call, period.

Brad and all of his new Sea Ray's would make the book for sure!

You are "one piece of work" and I say that with all the respect in the world.

Rusty to the rescue! Glad it was not a big deal, Mike.

What is so great with having Rusty is that he takes the hassel out of the problem. Try looking these parts up. I googled every combination I could think of just trying to find part numbers or a breakdown of what they look like ( I'm 2 Hrs. away). Anyhow the best single decision Sea Ray ever made, when it comes to customer retention, was to keep Rusty.

Rusty is "the man".
Did you happen to be bringing the boat over to west harbor last Sunday afternoon?

No that wasn't me. Unfortunatly was prepairing to pull the boat on Monday. SEE YOU IN THE SPRING.

OK, It was a beautiful 470. I figure we will probably cross paths eventually. Have a great winter and I certainly can't wait till next boating season...
