Prototype 240DA Hybrid

That was the Honda 600 Had a 2 cyl. engine I think

Somebody needs to put a pancake on top of this thing.

I agree with Gary, up to a point. Any form of transportation will cause pollution, somewhere. A famous fiction writer (Billandamy, help me on this one, please) coined the acronym TANSTAFL: There Ain't No Such Thing As Free Lunch! That said, engineers will always look for more efficient ways to convert energy into useful work -- that's what engineers do. If a boater wants the ability to cruise at hull speed or less for a significant portion of his time on the water, and be able to get up on plane and go fast on occasion, then a hybrid drive system such as this may be a valid solution. But probably not the only valid solution, and maybe not the most efficient one.

Robert Heinlein Science Fiction author - "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Starship Troopers", etc. Also added 'grok' and 'waldo'

One upside to road-going electric or hydrogen vehicles is being able to better control pollution at the energy source for them. Take the fuel burnt by the vehicle while on the road and move it to plants where it's possible to do a LOT more to reduce emissions. Or use entirely different methods to produce the electric (geothermal, solar, wind, wave, tides, etc).

It's true, there's no way to do any of it without there being some costs and pollution somewhere. But just because they don't totally eliminate the pollution, or they don't cost less than continuing to burn fuels, doesn't make them a bad idea. Moving away from burning fuel is better all around. The switch isn't going to come in one giant leap. It's going to take a bunch of steps and it has to start somewhere, the sooner the better.

Someday a water vessel will be invented that doesn't require an external fuel source and will instead harness power from the sun, wind or waves.

I think they call it a sailboat:huh:

OK... I was at the airport today and picked up a copy of Boating magazine. I think I paid $40 for it.

What a piece of crap magazine.... You should be reported and banned from CSR for even posting that you read this crap publication.

I found the article.... this was after reading about the woman in London who painted herself gray and hooked a big meat hook in her skin on her back and suspended herself in the air for 15 minutes to protest catching sharks... pictures and all... nice...

And then I got to the ICOM Santa and 3 chicks ad (6 page centerfold pull out with them progressing from teddies to short shorts and their cheeks hanging out... and the last page is them taking Santa out for a four-some...) very nice...

And then I got to cover story of "How to Fix IT"... which is a fictitious story of a guy in a speed boat who uses his life jacket to make a new fan belt...

And then I read "Mr. Popularity"...

And then I got to the "Green Sea Ray"... Which was a crap article...

I left the magazine on the plane...

someone lock this thread... put us out of it's misery.

I never said it was a S/R press release. But I found it interesting during these economic times that S/R would throw money at alternative propulsion.

As far as I'm concerned the painted broad can be used for fish bait...probably wouldn't get a bite off of her anyway. Shame on Icom for exploiting Santa in such a sexist ad. Over the last few years, Boating Mag has taken a turn for a 1 setting (toilet) read.

Lock the thread, ban me from CSR...I can take it. Atleast the thread was boating related.

I really was shocked on what a crappy magazine it was. I have not read it in awhile... It was really really bad.

It has gone down river....Biased reviews big time, some of their solutions to mechanical questions make me think they monitor some of the posts here on CSR.

I prefer to read about how someone caught his limit, went from waypoint A to B and saw a part of the world that I may never see.

Sorry you spent $5 bucks for it, that was one less drink you could've had on the plane. Damn those gift subscriptions anyway.....

Actually, I think it is reverse of what you said. I think some of the posters here on CSR read boating magazine and think they should post what they say here.

I really liked the article on "why you should replace the entire fuel line when it is all cracked up instead of trying to splice it all the time."

I only read yachting. anything under 60' isn't worth reading about.

You for got NUCLEAR!!

I just saw the new Power and Motoryacht magazine with the Hybrid 240 Sundancer. As suspected, what a stupid idea. The tests prove why a small diesel can give good fuel efficiency but why in the world one needs an expensive electric motor to go 4.6 mph for 45 minutes is beyond me. The electric motor is of no use while underway. If you can't justify the added cost of a diesel engine over gas based on fuel usage, you are going to have a real hard time justifying adding an electric motor, batteries, and all the electronics to save all that fuel you use idling around the dock.

Good grief...

Not so hard to justify if, as a test platform, it leads to better pricing on diesel powerplants and assistive electric power. As a retail purchase today, sure, it's "less than practical". But unless something is tried now, things are going to only get worse. I can't see it being very useful in an express cruiser setup. But for lakes, canals or other slow-boating conditions it'd be a worthwhile option.
