Thoughts and comments on buying the Passport protection plan with a new Sea Ray? This plan would apply to a new 44db with a total wrap coverage six years. Any other route to cover or does this plan work well for others? Thanks Labbur

Hi Labbur. this has been discussed before. Do a search and you will come up with a lot of opinions on this topic. I opted for an extended coverage plan on my engines only - from the engine Mfg.

I'd be very cautious about buying a 6-year warranty from any boat builder-including Sea Ray- in the current economic climate. Just one opinion...

Check the major component warrant coverage before you spring for the cost of a long term plan. I don't know with Cummins/Onan, but when we bought our boat, the hull, the engines and generator had 5 years coverage on a declining scale, You may already have some warranty on what will hurt you the most if you have a failure. If that is the case, you have to base your decision to buy on what you think is going to happen to a bunch of pumps, refrigerators, icemaker, and airconditioners in the warranty term.

Also, don't buy any extended warranty until you read over the full list of exclusions. They frequently excluse a lot of stuff you might not expect as well and consequential "damage"....for example, a shaft seal leaks. Its a $450 part, takes an hour to install, but it requires hauling the boat, pulling a prop and backing out a shaftt to access it. The haul out on a 44DB and yard labor is going to be more than the cost of the seal replacement.......will the plan cover that?

At our location, the guys that usually get their money's worth on extended warranties are the guys who buy complex gas boats that have tight engine spaces like the 320DA or the 340DA.

In my opinion and experience, things will break early on and be covered by manufacturers warranty or last a longer than the extended warranty (if maintained properly), which is what they count on otherwise they wouldn't make any money off of them. I bought a certified used boat and was offered a 3 year complete warranty for ~$3,500. I've spent less than that and have had the boat going on 4 years. The most expensive repair was preventable, the generator seawater pump mounting bolts loosened and saltwater was slung around and got in the controller box, causing a voltage regulator failure. ~$1,000 to repair, also damaged the battery charger and AC/DC convertor on the refrigerator, another $350. Other than that, I've had no real issues. (knock on wood).

An example is new tire road hazard warranties. I've never got one, and have saved an estimated $1,000 over the years. I've had one flat tire in that time, never a blow out. I called a wrecker to take me to Discount tire where they repaired the tire for free, the wrecker cost was reimbursed by my insurance. Some food for thought.

Peace of mind might make it worth the extra expense though.

Or you can do it the way I did. They gave me a price for the boat that I thought was fair. When the salesman asked what if I would accept the deal I said "thrown in a full 6 year warranty and I'll take the boat". It worked.

I realize there is a vast difference between our boat and yours, so your mileage may vary.

I purchased the engine coverage from Mercury on our 240 and it really paid off when the ECM went bad.

A protection plan is like going to vegas IMO. you're betting against the house and the odds are always in favor of the house.

unless you buy a big ole' honkin' boat with gassers. Then I would get the plan.

Has anyone actually, gotten Brunswick (the SR "Passport" extrended warranrty provider) to PAY for something that was covered?

This isn't a used car warranty where the provider uses every nuance of the plan to avoid apaying a claim. It is a premium warranty plan offered, owned and backed by Brunswick, not an insurance company with no interest in the policy owners well being.

The Passport warranty is actually a good program and is highly successful. There are very few complaints by owners who have purchased them. The one potential issue with coverage is that the dealer needs to know how to handle a claim properly. Our dealer encourages new boat buyers to purchase the plan, but the real seller of the plan is the service manager. He has had a lot of success in getting things covered and has covered $6K ea. in manifold and riser replacements on 3 boats I know of........$3600 worth of fuel cooler replacements on 5-6 others, and on one particular 390DA, a new engine .....a complete crate motor, not a short block..... a new transmission, then a replacement for that transmission when the first one failed, then replacing the gear set in the 2nd transmission when the gear case was mislabeled by ZF (talk about bad luck!) and a new generator.....the cost of which were several times the cost of the warranty plan. In fact, in nearly every case, particularly when the owner is not mechanically inclined, the warranty has paid for itself .

WELLLL, when I got my boat used it came with the extended warranty from the original owner. Today, i received the actual details of the plan from Brunswick and what they list as "what is not covered' is as long as your arm. Basically, NOTHING! We will se when Newport Boats puts in my claim how goof their service manager is (hopefully as good as yours!!!)

wait a minute... weren't you just sayin' the other day how "preventative maintenance" was a rip off and now you want to make a claim on an extended warranty?

Please! fill us in!

Don't call me names. I didn't call you a name... have some respect.

Now tell us about your "claim"... we are just dying to help you out.

what part of my last post where as gentleman, I suggested that we both stop responding to each other's posts, to save this board the grief that you dont understand? It's none of your damm business the nature of my insurance claims. Period. Go back to bed, Gary, its not that significant and stop answering my posts!

Man... it may be late here but I'm still typing complete sentences...

How can you ask a forum about "extended warranty" stuff and not explain what you are claiming? I mean... for all we know... maybe you like don't have a legit claim because of neglect (hypothetically speaking) and so bad-mouthing Sea Ray would be out of line. Plus! We really want to help!

After reading the exclusions, the fact that repairs are a one time deal and the cost I opted not to buy one. OF the folks I know that did buy they are very disappointed. Nothing they have needed repaired was covered.:smt009

I say save your money. The manufacturers warranty will cover most issues and what isn't covered is cheaper than the warranty IMO.
