In CA we pay 1% of the sales price each year. I assume this is for the water space i am occupying because my boat is permanently docked? Just curious, what kind of taxes do other states charge? Anyone ever try to write some of this off? For example, if you are on the boat alot and using as a second home?

No tax like that here in New York. But they get us in other ways. We pay a sales tax (varies by county) on the initial purchase price when we first buy it. Mine is like 8 3/4%. They get us for state income tax, property tax, school tax, etc.. My property and school tax comes to about 15K a year. Some municipalities also have an income tax. I paid one in NYC until I moved out to the suburbs a few years back.

Had to pay an in-lieu of tax and personal property tax each year. My boat sits in another state now - so no personal property tax anymore.

Great thing about a boat is that you can move it. Different states have different tax scams. Unfortunately you live in CA so your only options are Mexico or Oregon.

No property taxes, had to pay sales tax on the purchase price which is tax deductible in that tax year on 1140. Also, as I understand it, any loan interest is tax deductible as a second home providing you have cooking and sleeping facilities on the vessel.

We also pay a one time sales tax upon the purchase, around 7 1/2% if I remember correctly. We saved for many years to buy this boat last year, so no loan to write off as far as the live aboard thing. Oh well, no worries, just curious what was going on in other states.

Here in CT, they lost so much revenue when the had property tax on the boats, the made a change to the law. They raised registration on the boat and it is by foot, but no property tax. My registration is $165 a year and a sales tax when you purchase it.

Here in PR the first owners pay a 7% up to $10,000. And the registration goes by the foot,I pay $200.

Ohio - 7% (varies by county) Sales Tax on the purchase price of a new or used boat.

Minnesota, no sales on the purchase of a boat, (from a private party) tax only if purchased from a dealer. The value of the trailer (if there is one) is taxed @ 6.5% on a private party sale. Registration is good for 3 years and cost depends on the length of boat. My initial cost when I registered a 340DA was $93 valid until Dec. 2014. Cost after that I believe is another $70 for 3 years.
After reading the costs in other states....I'm happy to pay what I pay. Ouch.

WA residents pay their sales tax based on where the boat is moored. In our area it's about 8.13%. We don't have an annual income tax in WA but we do have high licensing fees. I pay about $450/year.

5% sales tax on boat if new or used from a dealer. No tax on private sale.
$0 to register it for ten years.
$22 lifetime to register a trailer.
No property tax on a boat or anything else except for real estate.

Cooking, sleping and a place to potty. In FL if your boat is not documented you also need to pay for a yearly regisrtation which increases in price as the boat gets bigger.

No property taxes on boats, 6% sales tax and registration every 3 years, on a 21 ft boat it was about $77. Trailer permanent plates $100. So i'd say reasonable here in Michigan

5% sales tax

Personal Property tax per year = 2.3% X assessed value
Assessed value = 60% low NADA value
(The assessed value can't be correct though... my 2007 310 = $5,400)

Registration is $60 every 5 years, not required if CG documented

Wow some of you guys need to move!

Alaska:

$0 sales tax
$0 personal property tax
$24 Registration fee for 3 years........

Man you guys get screwed.....

NC sales tax on new boats, not used boats, I think. Personal Property Tax around 2% of acessed value.

The funny thing is that they charge whoever owns the vessel on January 1st of each year. I bought the 410 two weeks later so no 2011 taxes. The 320 I bought on December 20th and received a tax bill from a different County and talked to them and they said the correct County will contact me....never did. Almost 3 years of boating with no tax bill other than sales tax at the time of purchase. Some people with expensive boats do the transaction offshore and then head to Mexico for a certain number of days to avoid sales tax.
