i have a question that i am hoping someone on here can help me with....i bought an 83 sea ray seville with a merc 120 last year and drove it for a few times prior to the season ending here in ohio and towards the end of the season we were out on the boat with a group of friends and got stuck in some sludge in one area and then the prop was stirring up cloudy water for a few secs then "no more go" can anyone tell me what they think would be my problem...i had it winterized prior to the season being out and the guy told me there were no metal shavings when draining the gear oil out of the lower unit so i am kind of stuck hoping its sort of an easy/cheaper fix. im open to any suggestions and MUCH thanx in advance...

I'm a new boat owner as well, but I believe that some props(if not all) are equipped with an internal plastic hub that is engineered to break when a prop hits something hard and stops suddenly. This helps avoid drivetrain damage.

I'm sure I'm using the wrong terminology for the plastic part I'm referring to , but I thought I'd mention it anyway, just in case

Good luck. Let us know what you find.

It sounds like the prop hub let go...

Nice screen name BTW

i was told about the rubber/ plastic hub doing that but i took my prop off and i could not find anything like such.... i was hoping thats what it was but maybe im looking at the wrong thing...not sure???? i have a stainless 3 blade prop....

H2ONUT thanx...

Matt

The hub is in the center of the prop. I believe it's called a Flo-Torq II prop hub.

The center hub is probably frozen in the prop. Who ever serviced your drive can help you out, should not be a big deal to knock out and replace.

H2O-
im gonna run to my storage building and take the prop off ill post back and let ya kno if i find anything out...thanks for all the help so far....

I think it is hard to see the rubber or plastic hub. You have metal in the center with the splines then the plastic or rubber ant then the outside metal of the prop.

With the motor turned off, can you put the boat in gear and try to spin the prop? If is spins I would assume the hub is spun.

Is this stainless or aluminum?

You are in ohio?? call delta propeller at 513-467-0601. They are great people and probably can help you out.

it is a stainless prop...do you know how much it usually cost to get something like that fixed?

matt

It depends on what brand you SS prop is. The average price is around $50 or so to do it yourself.

I agree. It sounds like a spun hub. Some spin just due to age as the rubber deteriorates. I don't think that this is a "do it yourself" project, as I believe that the replacement hub has to be pressed in. Every dealership has contact with a good propeller shop, and the cost shouldn't be too bad.

you guys are good that was going to be my question....i went and took my prop off last night and i was gonna ask about it being pressed in because i could budge it with a hammer at all....i will call the dealer or delta later this week and get things under way i hope that it truly is a spun hub that would make me smile so much more than if it was linkage in the lower unit screwed up.... i did put the boat in gear as stated in the above post and i could spoin the prop so is that a pretty much given that its a spun hub? Thanks again!!

matt

i was also wondering if any of you guys have any idea on what pitch prop to get if i get a new one.... i have a mercruiser 120 alpha 1 and the boat is a 19' seville... Thanks!!

matt

That's a whole nuther ballgame...

What size prop is on there now? What is your WOT RPM? Is it within OEM spec at WOT??

What are you looking for, economy, speed???

h2o-
im not 100% sure of the current props pitch i will check later after work to see what it is... i do know that when in a "no wake" zone i tend to make a little too much wake IMO but who knows... i am also having stalling out trouble sometimes when putting into gear... any suggestions there?

matt

Sounds like you need maybe a tune-up and then check timing, idle speed, carb adjustments.

If you are unfamiliar, it's best to have a good shop give a good tune up.

If you don't mind getting dirty and understand motors and carbs, grab a repair manual and go for it. You'll be amazed at what you can do...

On mine, the boat ran really rich. It has a Rochester 4bbl, which I knew nothing about. Did a little reading, then took it apart. It wasn't very dirty, but there were some parts that weren't moving or adjusted correctly. After the rebuild, I gained quite a bit as far a fuel economy, and easier starts warm and cold.

alright folks im getting back in the game here....had some other things that took some of my finances temporarily but i was wondering when i put the boat in forward gear should i be able to spin the prop? thanks guys/gals you all are a great help on here!!!
