Hi Guys,
My name is Mark. Bought my 1st ever boat which is a 1995/6 searay sundancer 270 in August 2010. Have totally refitted inside, which has been a grt passion, took boat out last weekend and motor ceased. Boohoo.. Any ideas how much this is gonna cost me to replace or rebuild??? Am based in Sydney, Australia in the Port Hacking. Would love to hear any similar stories.
Cheers

Gday Mark,

Buddy, your going to have to give a bit more info than that to get a considered answer mate.

Ceased? as in blew up = 20+k, ceased as in run out of gas $2.50.

What and how did it happen? Oh and welcome to the forum.

For obvious reasons, you might want to update you sig to include more info about your engine, drive, etc. Members can't assist you when they don't know what you have.

Mark,There is a place in Brookvale and on the web called Suburban imports. They have a good range although I haven't required their services personally.

Did it "cease" while it was running or did it fail to spin over when you turn the key?

Welcome to the site.
Engines usually cease up when the main bearings spin. If the rod bearings go then you will be able to see them sticking out the side of the block.
If this is the case and nothing came through the block you may get away with a rebuild and new crank.

You may have water on top of the piston if your manifolds are cracked. Did it cease up while cranking it over to start or while it was running?

As so many have stated, we need a little more info to really be able to dial in to your particular failure.

Ceased or seized? Considering the age of the engine it may be a case of water ingestation in which case it will cost a fair bit to rectify.

Take heart though as I have just spent in excess of $20K repairing my boat.

I've just been through this. Generally if the engine is running hard the water can't get back into it so it either siezes while it's sitting being unused or, in the case of mine, when it was idling. It just appeared to get a bit lumpy and then stalled.
When I tried to start it the engine "hydrolicted" and burst the starter motor. Pulled the plugs as soon as I got it home........water in four of the six cylinders, removed the manifolds/risers (stuffed!) Total bill just under £800. two manifolds and risers, (V6 but the same price as the V8 ones), 4 bellows, starter motor, gaskets, new bolts and a two tins of WD40. About 5 hrs work in all but I'm sure a professional could do it in half the time. Took a bit of getting started with everything swimming in WD40 but seems fine now.
