Looking for advice on where to start. While cruzing last Saturday the engine RPM shot up and the boat stopped going forward. I immediately idled back. She would not go into gear nor make any shiftin noise (moving the throttle forward or back was smooth, no grinding). There was no unusual smells nor noise. I thought I had lost the prop but did not. Then it started cutting off when I tried to put into forward (the delay switch must have slipped).
After trailoring the boat I shifted into forward then reverse, the prop locked as is supposed to but did not lock solid (I could turn the prop if I tried to).
I have three ideas as to the problem, rang a shaft, clutch burned out or a cable slipped. The first two do no sound like the culprit though.
I should get her into the shop after the next week.
Any ideas would be apreciated.

Thanks,

Glenn

Glenn,
See the answer in your last post. You most likely spun the hub, no big deal and it's a cheap fix. Prob. about 40 bucks if you have a mercruiser or quicksilver propset on an alpha one.

I pulled my outdrive last weekend. There was no oil in the upper housing and the gear was smooth, looked like a brillo pad in there.
I had it serviced, drove around a small lake once, then took it out for a trip, it lasted about 10 minutes at cruze speed.
I still have to stress to my mechanic that there was no oil in it and that he did service it. He thinks it would not have lasted around the lake with no oil up there. He is not stepping up to the plate on this one.
