problem with depth gauge

went out last weekend and depth gauge seemed to keep alternating between between 1.3 and 3 feet
started suddenly
did not hit anything in the water or scuff bottom
could the sensor on the transom get dirty or short out
is it easy to replace or clean

I have the same problem. I'm researching a bit myself. After checking the connections behind the unit itself and the fuses, I'm considering the same thing you are. I'll let you know if I find anything. I really don't want to have to replace it. Also, my fresh water pump isn't working, but I'm almost sure that the two are unrelated.
