I'm meeting a fellow selling a 1984 2hp Johnson 2-stroke outboard on Sunday morning. Naturally he claims little use of the motor and has been stored for some time. What would you consider a fair price? What is the compression reading for a motor like this? Thanks!

you might want to check a couple of sources..I've found that looking on craigslist for your area is one place where people post a lot of boating items..the others would be ebay.

How much is he asking?

FWIW - My merc motor - 4 hp approx 1984 read about 90 psi but after pulling the pull cord several times. If I remember correctly it took 3 pulls and then maxed out.

I paid $200 but it needed a shifter. I purchased this from merc. I also replaced the water pump, prop shaft bearings and seals, and of course a spark plug. I think the parts were about $100 - $150 or so. It runs like a top.

If you intend to check the compression, the cylinder must be wet with an oil mix before taking readings. Two stroke engines are naturally "loose" since they don't have an oil system and you need to be sure the rings seal before checking compression. The best test for a 2 stroke is to put it in water and "fire the mutha up" to be sure it runs, will idle, and will run up to full speed.

If that one falls thru, I have a friend who has a Merc 5 hp 2 stroke with about 4 hours on it and he wants to sell it since he doesn't use a dinghy any more.
