Would you buy based on a survey that “passed” done in April/May?

Im looking at two 300 WE’s one has twin repower w 100hrs currently and the other has closed cooled 454’s w 700 hrs. The latter had survey the other I’ll order if I’m interested.

Thoughts?

Nope, if you didn't hire the surveyor then it's not your survey. The surveyor should represent and protect your interest not the sellers. I would get my own independent surveyor.

Who was the survey for, another buyer? Insurance company? The boat you’re considering, I would look at it and go from there. If you have enough knowledge and experience to double check some things you might be ok.

This is a sanity check for me and preparing if seller objects to my hiring my own surveyor.

I too would like to know why the survey. But it’s a good attempt to add value to your selling a vessel I guess. If seller is willing to share it and it’s a dry solid boat w working systems then.... it’s “surveyed” right?

A 1-2 month old survey isn’t obsolete is it? It was surveyed in May 2020.

Technically the survey is obsolete the minute you leave. Things can change and fail just by sitting there. It only captures a review of the systems for a moment in time.

It may be as simple as him having had a condition and value survey done for his insurance company. The company that NBOA put me with wants one every 5 years.
But as a buyer you want your own purchase survey and sea trial done with you there.
Well worth the money and a great opportunity to ask the surveyor a lot of questions about the boat while he’s there.
Be realistic about the survey when you get it. Simple things like replacing clamps, etc. are to be expected on a used boat. Any systems, mechanical, or structural stuff that need repair or replacement are a different story.
I personally lean towards having the seller take care of those things before closing the deal and paying the price negotiated before survey because everything’s more expensive than you think once you get in to it.
Others prefer to renegotiate the sale price and take care of the repairs or replacement themselves after closing.
It would usually be unreasonable for a buyer to expect a seller to make the corrections and discount the sale price too.
If this particular boat doesn’t meet expectations after survey for some reason, or you can’t come to terms with the seller for previously unnoticed issues, you’ll at least walk away with a lot more knowledge about that model and know what to look for in the next boat before investing in a survey for it.
If the seller objects to you having a purchase survey done at your expense then you should walk away.

Contact the surveyor. Let him know you are interested in boat and are considering another survey, by him. See what his response is. A good man will have a good response.
