One of my books say use dextron2 and the other says to use GM power steering fluid. I am sure both will work but I just want to use the ideal fluid. I always thought that the ATF was the cheaper route but not the best. The system is drained right now. Also is there any problem if the two are mixed. It had dextron or red in it and might have a little left in the system. I am guessing the dexton has more detergents in it. Thanks.

You can't get dextron II any longer. If the system is empty and clean, use power steering fluid.

Thank you very much. I just put in power steering fluid about 10 minutes ago. I am happy I didn't put in the dexton 3. Thanks again fc3.

That brings up a question. Is there something different about the older systems that DexIII can't be used? Does DexIII not mix with DexII?

Dexron III works fine in a Dexron II application. It just supersedes the other application and is fully lower number compatible.
