Hi all!! New to the forum as well as to a cruiser class boat. I am looking for nice quite anchor spot on the Potomac for our first over nighter. The Admiral is little apprehensive about sleeping on the hook, so I would like a nice piecefull hideaway to ease her concerns. Anybody want to give up one of their secret spots? I promise, I'll just use it this weekend.... I am docked at Aquia Creek and want to head South, no farther than St Mary's. Looks like the weather will be perfect!!

Head up the St. Mary's River in St. Mary's County. On the east side of the river is St. Mary's College which has an area where several boats anchor. I live near there and have had plenty of boats anchor overnight or for the weekend right in front of my house (a bit further upriver than the college). Great scenery there at the college and a great calm large river.

Thanks ...

Gun, anchored at horseshoe bend on the St. Mary's. Very nice, calm spot to spend the evening. You have a beautiful river...

If the river's rough and you decide to go North, I can highly recommend Mattawoman Creek. On the weekends there are always boats coming and going by day, but it settles down in the evenings. As you enter the creek, the first and second coves to starboard are nice anchorages. I hear there are more places to anchor further upstream, but i've never been that far. I think the biggest drawback is there is a lot of hydrilla that can get into the generator strainer (if you have one) so anchor further from shore in deeper water. It's a great swimmin' hole, too.

Thank you very much RiverGalsMan. I will certainly give it a try this weekend. It's tuff to find a place thats peacefull now a days.

If you ever even futher, try Wades Bay. Its on Maryland side, east of Aquia Creek. Its right off the channel, so you tend to get bounced around in the morning. It has close to 4 foot of water right up to the very secluded shore line.

RjVA, this weekend is the Fairview Beach Aquapalooza. Aren't you going to that? If not, you just might be the only boat at Mattawoman

Nope, not going. That place gets entirely to crowded with to many drunk captains for my liking. I am going to head south to Coles Point Plantation/Ragget Point.

Good to hear! Were you there over this past weekend? I -may- have seen you out there.... my back yard looks directly out at the day marker there. House is dead west of it. If it was you I saw, you must have been south of the marker?

Glad you had a good time. Your 260 is one I aspire to one day, to do the same things you are doing. :smt001

Tom

No need to aspire, I'll trade you my 260 for your house!!!

I was there on Wednesday the 18th. We anchored for lunch, from about 10is to 1pm. I can't wait to do an over nighter on your river. Maybe this weekend if we don't get a slip at Coles Point Plantation.

We are blue hulled 260, named "Diana Gail", feel free to hail us if you see us!!

Port Kinsale Marina is across the river (sort of ) from the St Mary's River and is a great place to stay. We also enjoy the Alexandria City Marina in Old Town Alexandria. A lot of fun for overnight/weekend visits.
