Does a 350 mag have to be pulled out of a 260DA to replace the oil pan? Looks to me like it does, but am interested in other's opinions. I may have a leak and it appears oil pan has been patched on the underside around the plug. I definitely have a leak, but found the washer/gasket around the drain plug to be defective. I hope a new one will be the answer, but I am seldom that lucky...Thanks

I'm in the same situation as you right now. I have a leak in my oil pan right around the drain plug area. Feels like it is rusty around that area. There is no way to replace the pan without removing the engine. Mine is a 7.4 litre and It looks like I'm going to have to remove almost everything on the front of the engine to get it out. I'm going to get a quote to see what it will cost me to get it done at the shop, but I know it won't be cheap.

Same problem. Replaced the engine last season and I should have put a new oil pan on but didn't. On my 240 sundeck the engine definitely has to come out.

As long as you can just remove everything and lift it straight up and out, takes longer to get the motor up and out than it takes to change the oil pan.Basically pull the drive , pull the motor, R/R the pan, drop it back in , check alignment, install drive

I got down in the ER today. Took my iphone and took a gazillion pics. Mine has some kind of coating around the drain plug-an area about 4"x4"-maybe some kind of patch from days past. There was no oil on this coating, and my leak was the drain itself I think. When I removed the plug, remote drain hose, etc, the gasket/washer between the plug and the pan was really in bad shape. It is metal with a rubber like center that fits around the plug. I have ordered 2 of these today. If I can get lucky just one time, this may just fix mine.

Well I know its going to be expensive. I've got a 7.4 in mine and there is not much room to get it out. The shop rates up here are very high as well and most of the places here are just set up to work on smaller boats as locally it is just lake boating here.

Talked to two different places today. One said a minimum of 7 hours labor, the other said 25 to 30 hours of labor. Quite a difference in range. The Pan itself is $300 to $450 depending on if you go OEM or aftermarket and the gasket will be about $60. Then there are the drive gaskets and other parts that will be required. As I said its not going to be cheap. I'm still considering doing it myself at this point.

Your not looking for a mercruiser or aftermarket pan, get an original GM pan correct for your year. Maybe 100 to 150. What drive gaskets do you speak of? It will probably take longer than 7 hours depending on the equipment you have available to you.

The Sierra pan referenced above for the 350 mag looks to be around $150-160 plus the pan gasket, but may can find cheaper on ebay. The OEM pan by Mercruiser I believe I saw for about $275. To me, 25-30 sounds excessive and 7 may not be enough. I in fact have an oil pan that has been patched at some point in the past. My plan is to clean it up well enough to eat off of it, repatch with Marine Tex, and get through this season. Have it replaced during the slow time. Hopefully, I can get a better deal on labor. Thoughts or advice appreciated?

So you want to pull your engine and put a POS oil pan on it for now, and then do it again in the off season?

I've patched a rusty leaking pan with JB water weld without removing it to get thru the season.

That link was from Ebay.

I had the same issue when I had the 260..... Had to have the engine pulled...Changed the pan... And was good as new.... Till the next problem... But hey, it's a Boat.. It's expected...

No, patch it in place and pull later to replace the pan.

A automotive GM pan is different than the marine pans. The one you linked to is a marine pan. The drive gaskets need to be replaced as you have to pull the drive before you can remove the engine.

I'm more and more thinking that I will do this myself. When I do put a new pan in I'll spray it with undercoating before I do.
I measured the hatch opening last night, its 36.5" by 57.5" and the engine is 34 1/8 inches front to back so it will just make it coming out.

Pans are the same, it's a GM block.Drain plug may be in a diff. spot, and the're no gaskets on a B3 drive

Pans appear to be the same but are not. Internal baffles are different, dipstick tube is different. I'll stick with a Mercruiser pan. No gaskets on B3 drive but there are O rings and seals that need to be replaced.
