I have a newbie question. My 2001 215 EC came with the portable head with pump out and the previous owner never used it. We are looking at doing an overnight trip to block island and would like to have the option of using it in an emergency. Other than putting some of the SeaLand deodorant and some water in the holding tank is there anything else I need to do? Once you use it how soon do you have to pump it out? Also any suggestions for keeping the cabin from smelling horrible? I looked through the owners manual and it didn't say very much about it. Thanks.

Had the same setup on our 215. Just make sure the fittings are tight for the pump out. If the unit is closed you won't smell anything with chemicals.

I had the same setup on the 225 as well. In addition to the advice already given I would say if you start using it, pump often. I found it was best to pump out, add water, pump again, add water and pump again then add chemicals and go. The way the hose is positioned, you will probably not be able to pump 100% of the liquid contents out.

If you're anticipating only doing a pump-out on rare occassions, you might be best served to cap off the line and vent fittings on the toilet. Then just use it as a regular porta-potti. This way you could empty it at anytime, anyplace and not have to worry about needing to find a pump-out facility. If you'll have regular access to a facility, then you'll be fine.

Your boat is 11 years old and this has never been used? I would take the safe road. Before you start filling it up with stinky stuff fill it with water and maybe some fo the head sanitizer of your choice and pump it out. Maybe drive around with it full. Check for leaks and make sure you can pump it out. The rubber fitting and hoses may need to be tightened or resealed and you don't want to find out if there is a need when it is full of pee pee.

Thanks, good point. The previous owner just used it for day trips scuba diving and just never used it. With little ones I'm sure I won't go long before someone has to use it.
