I have been resisting putting a grill on the boat...But think it might be a good idea for my kids to get me one for Fathers day.
I have seen the Magma grills and they seem nice. I have also seen some infrared models on the net.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I would want to stow somewhere in the engine compartment when not in use, and would like it somewhat compact and contained.

Thanks!

I've used a 15 Magma original kettle grill for quite a few years. It stows easily under the helm seat base. I'd like to get the Magma Kettle 2 with the hinged lid. I've seen some of the rectangular sized but they are pretty bulky and are often permanently mounted on the transom.

I just picked up the Magma Newport version - rectangular thing, hinged lid, etc. that runs off the 1 lb tanks. Got it with the rod holder assembly - supposedly that makes it easy to use. I've read enough posts on here to make me think the whole grilling on the boat thing is a bad idea - but I'm sure I will be able to make that decision, or confirm it myself, in the next 30-45 days. We're having a gas grill added at the dock which a few of us have decided to split - and there's a damn good (albeit, pricey) restaurant right there too. I don't feel like adding any extra cleaning time to my life over a piece of grilled meat or fish....but we'll see.

I have been using the Magma Kettle with hinged lid for 4 years. It's mounted just above the "lazarette"cover. Had to drill a hole and install a mount that has a cover when not in use, and easy to place grill with optional hardware. The grill itself is placed in the lazarette in its bag when not in use. No mess, no fuss, everyone is concerned about burning embers or whatever landing on the hull area directly underneath. Use that old towel that everyone has aboard, plus use low heat and keep the cover closed! Enjoy your rib eye, t-bone, filet, hamburger.

I have both the kettle type grill and the rectangular one with the hinged lid, Either one can be placed in the rod holder. I've found the rectangular one with the hanged lid to be far superior. My kettle has a lid that is attached by a metal cable so you can't lose the top and a clip inside the lid to hook the lid on the edge of the grill; not a very good setup as the lid falls off at the drop of a hat or a passing wake as the case may be.

Magma Newport - Great

Used it twice this past weekend - Filets and then Chicken.

We've had the magma kettle grill for 5 years - it kicks a**! The better half has made fresh pizza's, fondu's, ect.. Works great at dock (if you can grill at dock) and at anchor. +1 on the lid getting bumped off when hanging from the side (but it does have a cable). Lost LPG cylinder once (it floats). All in all you'll enjoy it if you use it! Just picked up rectangular one but haven't used it yet. - Jeff

My Magma 17 bolts onto the handle on my swim platform. We just bought it last year and enjoyed it a lot.

 on the Magmas.. have the Monterey on the 240SD with the pole mount on the swim platform and with a rail mount on the 370EC. Did T-bones and chicken breasts this weekend as well. :smt038

my magma get used more than anything else. GREAT addition to a boat.

great link and install Todd

I see you guys rec. the bigger magma - I am buying a grill for the boat pretty soon and plan to use the gimbal mount (in a flush mount rod holder). Any rec's on what grill to use? I see you guys like the bigger magma, anyone tried to use a non-marine portable propane grill? Is this a safety issue? I am hesitant to drop 200 bucks on the stainless magma if a webber will do the job for 40 bucks. I know a guy who uses a regular portable grill, but that doesn't mean its a good idea.

Can you keep the grill installed in a rod holder with a cover, not much storage on a 240DA.

I purchased a Weber Q100 grill for my boat. It works great and I use it outside of boating as well. For a mount, I used a fish cutting table that fits in the rod holder with a piece of plastic screwed in the front to keep it stabilized. Storing it on a 250, well that's another story.

thanks - another guy I know does that, i wasn't sure if it would be safe, since it's not marine specific. I don't want hot pieces of grill flying all over the place if I hit a wake or a wave while grillin my fresh catch!

I also use the Magma Kettle grill with a rod holder mount - does a great job and is easy to store. I don't think I'd grill while underway no matter what kind of grill I had. Not sure if your statement was with you underway or at anchor/dock and another wave or wake hitting you.

Check out Holland grills. I've used Holland for years. Best grill I ever had. They make a portable SS grill now. I bought one for the boat this year. Can't wait. I did finally find some Bubba burgers. Heard about them on another thread here. Had a friend call and found them in Louisville Ky. He brought me a box home. Best frozen burger I've had. I guess I'll have to order them. They do have there own web site.
