I know that CruisAir makes a nice unit. However, I have the chance to buy a portable A/C unit (like you would buy at Home Depot). It's free-standing and is about 3 ft tall and fully self contained (except for small exhaust pipe that I could place thru side window). Has anyone every set up something like this on their boat as a low cost solution?

I don't think you would want to use one of these units, if the outlet is not air tight you're wasting energy, plus it takes up a lot of space. How long will the "exhaust pipe" have to be? Doesn't make sense to me.

The pipe is about four feet long. I was thinking of puting in the aft cabin area and running the exhaust thru the aft window under the pilot station. I can build a piece to seal it tight but you're right...it's will take some space. Believe me, I'd much rather have a hatch unit but I can get this dirt cheap from the company I work for. Just a thought.

This guy made it work for his car

That will work fine. A few boats down from me did this same thing and works great! There is even a small duct that runs along the ceiling in the aft cabin to get the air out into the main cabin.

I purchased one and I have a 1981 SRV 245 Flybridge. It does take up some room but keeps the boat nice and cool. I put the exhaust out the window.

I have a 1978 SRV 240 and would be very interested in seeing any pictures you might have of your portable AC install.
