I have a 04, 320da, merc V's MPI, went out Saturday, started right up, drove for about 45 minutes, temp was fine, then the port died. Started right up again, drove for about 2-hours then died again. After this it would not start up again. The fuel/water was fine, plenty of gas, turns over, but you can smell gas when you try to start it.

Have you tried firing her up again? Or does it not start up at all anymore? Have you tried pulling one of the spark plugs to see if it's wet with fuel? When it actually runs, does it seem to run normally (no misfiring?)? Do you have two fuel tanks?

At a distance any thing would be a guess. Sounds like a vapor lock of some sort. On these MPI rigs, you're really shooting in the dark without an analyzer/laptop hooked up to it.

Let us know what you find.

I know it sounds funny, but you should be glad it finally stalled and will not restart, could you imagine going through the summer with an intermittent stall that would be almost impossible to duplicate and diagnose!
You need to confirm it has the 3 things needed to run, Air, Fuel and Ignition. Step one is to confirm that each one of these exists. Then update your post with more information.
If you need assistance on how to confirm these 3 things are present, let us know.
Good luck
Kevin

Had the very same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Wires got frayed and shorted out the pump. Had to replace the pump.

Be very careful with this one! You say you can smell gas. Trust your instincts.

Sounds like an intermittent spark issue.

Will you be doing any of the repair work or are you just getting a feel for things for when you call your Tech in?
