When we are out and we do play the stereo alot
and also always run the gen set.
port battery keeps going dead when on the water.
when we get back and plug into shore power the thing charges back up??
My question is why is this thing not charging when on the water and gen set is running.
Always use emergency jump from the starboard to start port no issues at all.But we spent the nite out sun nite with the gen set running all nite and port was still dead.
this is on a 97 330 sundancer
sure would apprec any feed back on this subject

do you have your battery charger ON when on generator? generator only charges own battery and to charge engine and house batteries you need to use battery charger (converter)

yes the charger is on but not charging when gen set is
runnin
just when i plug into shore power does it start chaging again.

you need to check the output of your charger while the generator is running. Basic troubleshooting. Might be easier to put a volt meter on the battery while everything is supposed to be charging.

There are two main breakers on the panel. One on the top feeds the breakers for Stove, water heater, refrig, and AC charger. One on bottom runs the AC and the microwave. I am sure they are but both breakers are on right?

When you turn on the AC charger and you have the gen running you do see the amps jump up as the charger comes on right. Also when you look at the charger in the bildge, should be mounted right in front of the port engine on the bulkhead you see it's light on and it's amp gauge showing that it's putting out amps right?

Ours runs off the gen fine and charges the batteries, how fast depends on our DC use while the gen is running.

Also there could be nothing wrong at all. You might be drawing a lot of load off the battery bank and the charger can't keep up. It's only a 30A charger and when it's on if you are running the fridge, blowers (since gen is on), stereo, etc that load may be more then the charger is putting towards the battery and you still are draining the battery.

Last check is to do a load check on the battery. You may have a bad cell and while it looks like you charge the battery on shore power, really the batteries never fully recover, that coupled with your load while running the gen could be the cause of what you are seeing...

Just my thoughts!!!

Take Care!!

this may sound stupid but did you switch from shore to ship when you are running generator? do you have 120v in outlets when gen is on? maybe output fuse is blown?

There's a small amp in-line glass fuse that may have burned out preventing the charger from working. trace from the charger back to the genset and you'll find it.
