Just curious as to what others thought about my invoice. 2001 Sea Ray 380, with 8.1’s. Bottom was completely sanded, blisters repaired, tuneup on engines, generator, new anodes, etc... How do the prices look, labor, etc. Please critique.

The prices seem reasonable although they seem to be random as opposed to be based on MSPR or whole sale with a markup. All of the labor seems to be either flat rate for each job as opposed to time and material. Bottom line is, are you happy with the work and do you trust the vendor? I tend to not trust invoices that look like wild ass guesses.

What hourly labor rate is behind the $1,650? That looks a bit high to me since the bottom work and buffing quotes would include the labor for those. Assuming the labor is at say $150 (which is a guess and may be high) then that would be 11 hrs. That seems maybe a bit high for the listed items but like most shops, they usually don't discount the belt replacement standard rate when they do impeller jobs, despite the fact that there is near zero incremental cost because the belt is off anyway for the impeller replacement. The hours look in line with what I have experienced for those items if I add up in my mind what I have paid separately in the past.

Its like when you drop your car off at 8:00 and pick it up an noon and they tell you the labor for the repair was 6 hrs. I sometimes ask if its safe to drive the car home while the mechanic is still under the hood working.

Haha. I like the last quote about the mechanic. I will review my other notes. I remember the owner of the shop explaining the $1,650. I will try to find my notes.

The $1,650 is the total hourly rate for everything done. The bottom job is a single line item. I also had a barrier coat applied, which charged addition labor. If I’m not mistaking. The rate is $90 per hour. Does that sound about right for everything? I’m not trying to cause a problem, I’m just reviewing everything for future wisdom. All the repairs and work looked REALLY good. I was shown all the parts that were taken off my boat, and parts replaced with. I took pictures of the entire process. The owner/mechanic was very transparent with me. I was shown the fluids that came out, the old filters, everything.

Then I wouldn’t sweat it. It can be very hard to find a qualified mechanic that will work like that. As said before, prices seem a little random. $90 per hour isn’t bad.

At 100 per hour it is one person for one week. I could not do all that work in a week
Parts look about correct
I like the buff and wax price. Might be lost Leader like 24 Bud for $15

I can’t believe they didn’t charge you for the beer during the lake test.... I think they like you :)

For what it is worth, I gave him a decent tip. He was very easy to work with, communication was superb, and he would ask for my approval before he did any additional work.

So we can’t critique? .... just my opinion but I think you paid $2k too much
The bottom job was right on the rest was high

Oh yes, please critique away. I “feel” like I was charged fairly, but I might have a wrong “feeling”. The reason for posting the invoice, was to learn and gain wisdom going forward.
