play in throttle

ok i got the overheating problem figured out. The seal on the water pump in the outdrive was sucking alittle air when i got fully on plane. To my new problem.... when i push the throttle forward theres is about 2 to 3 inches of play before it actually engages. When it does engage the tranny makes a ticking noise like it is not fully engaged until i push the throttle about an inch more... is there an adjustment to tighten or loosen that linkage where it will go directly in gear without the noise. any info in the right direction is appreciated.

There is an adjustment. A series of procedures to do.
Need to look at a service manual to get it right.
