Pirates

Mike,

What's really interesting is just what was a US Flag vessel doing there? Maersk is a Danish company, and the only US Flag vessels they operate are part of a special subsidiary company that hauls cargo for the US Government.

When?

The opportunity was when the Capt. dove out of the lifeboat and began swimming away. Thats when we should of evaporated the orange target. The Capt. did his part, he took the risk and we dropped the ball.
I don't think our guys and gals dropped the ball. I believe our their Commander and Chief has not given them the ball. I think they didn't have permission to to "take the shot". Just my opinion.

Agree.

Here's a question, when did we decide that it wasn't fashionable to incur caualties to insure freedom for our citizens? Didn't tens of thousands die on Iwo Jima to secure an airfield as a stopover point for the bombing of the Japanese mainland? Think our military leaders believed we could capture that island without losing a man? Make no mistake we're as much at war now as we were then.
Freedom costs, visit Arlington National Cemetary if you have any questions. This time it might just cost that ships captain.
I agree 1000%...freedom has a price, freedom isn't for free, sometimes we pay with our lives! Sink the boat, they cant shoot and swim at the same time!

Want to get the problem ended, sink the mother ships before they start... Get a president with some balls.....blockade the ports that these bastards use as home base. Get aggressive...

Ah crap, my day is ruined already.

The coast line is too vast, equivelent to our eastern seaboard and we only have a 246 ship Navy. Can't have them all in one place!

That is so stupid it really doesn't warrant a response. What good is killing the captain? What is it going to accomplish? ...kill the 4 pirates that hijacked a ship..."we'll show them"...Then what? Do you really think taking those 4 creeps out will stop the problem. All that will happen is that a brave man will lose his life at the expense of 4 that don't really deserve to live and in the end, nothing else changes.....more hijacking, more pirates.

And yet you respond...I wasn't advocating taking out the lifeboat with the captain aboard, I was stating that whether by the pirates hand or others on land the captain may lose his life as a price for future freedom in these shipping lanes.

Oh, and I agree with your last comment. What burns me most is that the French are showing more balls than we are....embarrassing.

If they don't set a precedent with piracy it will only get worse.

I have a three step process for the new president to step up and prove there are two balls down there somewhere and that NOBODY should dare mess with the United States.

#1 On safe exchange of the captain give them the $2M dollars they want.

#2 Have tactical people on the ground to follow the pirates when they get off the life boat. Instantly take out the pirates that were on the life boat (sell the video to US news stations and the gov't can recoupe their $2M).... send over twenty jets for a "pearl harbor" style attack and SINK every known pirate ship...

#3 Make an international statement that if anyone who has pirated in the past year does not return ransom money received in full, with in 10 days, they will be assasinated on the eleventh day.

HAVE THE GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY FOLLOW THROUGH.

Now who wants to arguee this won't put an end to piracy for a long while?

The problem is that international maritime law prohibits cargo vessels from having firearms. The law is comply inept and worthless now. Kind of like the UN. I wouldn't think of sailing, in any boat, off US waters without a sidearm and at least an AR...preferably an M1A..... for a little more of that "reach out and touch someone" before they get close enough to be a threat. I'm sure we will see a change to corporate policy and "international" law, as its got to be cheaper to arm merchant sailors or put armed guards on their boats than it is to sail the USS whatever to an f*in African coast, pay a ransom, and wait. All to deal with some rag tag SOBs that should be shot dead when in first sight. You want to discourage piracy? Kill them and make an example and continue doing that until there ain't no more pirates.

Whoo, slow down. I'm sure that a strongly worded letter to the UN is being drafted by a blue ribbon, bi-partisan committee. That will resolve the problem without having to involve those arrogant French cowboys.

Will it be the same letter that was sent to Sadam Heusin (or what ever his name was) 17 times. I'll take the arrogant American Cowboys (Navy Seals)...thank you very much:grin:

You folks are a hard crowd. Diplomacy and negotiation were tried with unsatisfactory results so we got as agressive as was necessary...be fair guys, maybe he does have some balls. Lets see how he handles a more significant event...time will tell.

This event proves that there is a benefit to exposing a ship to the Jones Act. Our Navy got our ship back now let's see the Russians get their's back.

what can I say now? Rangers lead the way!! (my an ex member and proud if it!) but the Seals kicked some major ass! Well done boys!!! Did they really take him out with a .50 cal?

The commander in chief handled this very well I believe. Zero US casualties. Pres. gave Navy OK to use force on Friday. If everything that happens is the commanders fault. Then give him credit for things well done.

Just my opinion
