Pictures

I saw the same thing on my last post with pictures. One of the files I tried to upload got that message so after several attempts, I just cropped the image and it worked. Wondering why..

I tried the cropping fix and that still failed. Obviously it wasn't enough. I'll try to chop a photo down even more.

That worked. About 2/3 original size. I hope I don't have to keep doing that.

I can't help with what has changed as I haven't been around long enough to have made a before and after comparison.

I will suggest though, based on my previous experience with such things, that decreasing the resolution of the picture (if possible) will afford you much more elbow room than cropping the perimeter, where the ultimate file size is concerned.
The other advantage to this approach (when it's available) is that you don't loose content. ie, the picture still contains the whole view of the original, just contained in a smaller file size.

The potential advantage of retaining all that resolution (when there is no file size limit) is that 'the picture' can be zoomed in on, or blown up after it is uploaded. This is particularly useful for such things as wiring diagrams and parts schematics.

I don't know the board's file size limit, or what phone/camera you may be using, but generically it is safe to say that:

If you're taking pictures on your phone/camera and they will not upload without cropping, there should be an adjustment that will allow you to decrease the default resolution when it takes that original picture, so that cropping is not necessary.

Phones/Cameras usually default to six or > eight times the resolution than is needed for internet display. This may be a good thing IF you are printing (and blowing up) all the pictures you take. If you are not printing them, but rather sharing them via the internet or email, you can potentially safe yourself a lot of grief, by making that one adjustment.

Same issue. Generally my iPhone photos would upload without any cropping.

That's all well and good but I don't take pictures for the internet. This is as close as I'll ever get to a social platform.
This is the only forum I'm on that is now needing cropping. I'm not going to save multiple cropping of the same picture just to post a picture here.

Whoa . . . back up the bus fellas.
I did not mean to, nor was it my intent to imply that you should do anything.
My post was only an attempt to shed some light on the realities of the digital world and how picture resolution can effect results vs. what one might expect. No more, no less.
. . . I keep getting file too large pop-up when I attempt to upload a picture.What has changed?

I perceived these comments posed questions that deserved an answer, so I attempted to do so.

Given your results and the additional info, it appears that something has changed. Either that, or there is something 'buggy' going on. In either case, the management (who remains unknown to me at this time) will need to respond to your inquiries. Perhaps there is a place here to report such idiosyncrasies that I am also unaware of?

I was only meaning to offer a simple solution if it was applicable.
Unfortunately, it evidently was not.

I was getting this error as well, which is why I started adding links to my photos.

Actually I interpreted you did suggest changing settings on our phones... Anyway - no biggie - My "ditto" wasn't an attack - I was just stating my opinion that I would not want to have picture's with different settings for this site. Often times I read about something and I realize I have a picture somewhere which might help the poster. I did not take that picture (sometimes years ago) just to help him, only found it in my library.

I have been here for many years, and something has change recently. I believe we are posting in the correct spot - "New Server Bugs" and hoping @CSR_Admin will chime in.

Excuse me please, in any case.

I did NOT realize this was a SERVER BUGS Thread. My bad.
Had I realized that, I would have stayed STFU.

Now I know better and will pay more attention.

I'm still getting the "security error" message. With photos that are 11mb and smaller. I also notice that in my search bar, it now says that this site is "not secure" when it was secure a couple of weeks ago. A passworded site should always be secure. At least every other site I am on and post to are secure and except photos of less than 25mb.

Absolutely a server or site issue here.

I have the warning on the web address now. Someone that runs this site needs to do some maintenance.

2.7MB is "too large for the server to process".
1.68MB (90%) resized seems to have worked. The below picture is a 90% resized.
Also, it seems, an aggregate of all the attachments. So, if more than one high resolution image needs to be posted they have to be done as an edit function one at a time if you want them on a single post.
At first I thought it was a membership issue but doesn't seem to be. Something has changed though.
My enthusiasm as a contributor is waning.
