Pictures of Garmin 540 GPS on 240

If you order your RAM mounts from e-mount.com they seem to have a very good policy on returns and stuff.

I ordered a RAM-111U cause I was going to mount it on the dash and not the bar so that it would be front of me and well after seeing everything I'd have to move to do it I changed my mind to a bar mount like Pauls so I called them up and they are sending me the different parts I need to change it and a return label to return the parts I didn't need. Very good customer service.

Paul,

Got the GPS wired, and I ordered the same mount. Should be here in a couple of days. Thanks for listing the part numbers...it was a big help.

Good luck with the hand.

Several people have asked me to post pictures of my 540 GPS. the GPS is a perfect fit for a 240 select or the 240 sundeck. The unit is mounted to the windshield support bracket with 1 inch mounting componets from Ram Mount.

You should get the stainless steel u bolt instead of the plated bolt when you order the mount . There are 4 parts for this mount they are B231, B201,B202, AND RAP319. The only other thing you need is 3 SS screws AND LOCK NUTS to mount your GPS BRACKET TO the Ram Mount. Cost is about 50 dollars

As an added bonus the Icom 302 was mounted below the dash panel using two blocks of wood that were shaped to fit the dash panel curvature. The 3 foot whip antenna is mounted to the bimini and is removed when it is not beibg used. To keep the bracket from scratching up the aluminum frame wrap a couple of layers of painters tape around the support pole. Painters tape is easy to remove at the end of the day.

can i get a link on where to order this mount?.. thanks.. c rock

Paul, I realize your original post is a few months old now but I just joined the group and have a 250 Select and a Garmin 535. I ordered the mount you used but am wondering how and where you ran you power to the fuse block. I am considering going in where the compass mounts or at the seam where the "dash" screws to the fiberglass and filing a small relief there to snake it down under. Thanks for any suggestions and ideas.

Mark welcome to CSR. It is never too late to ask a question every one is here to help.

I would stay away from the compass. You will have a small electric current flowing by the compass which could throw your compass off.

I used a seam in the boat and ran the cable down the seam and that worked great for me. The other choice is to drill a hole in the helm and snake the cable down to the terminal block. If you go this route consider drilling a hole large enough for a groment. Your local hardware store will have groments. If you do not want to drill that big of a hole drill a small hole and then take a turn of electrical tape around the cable to prevent chaffing. Seal with a dab of silicone and your in business. I hope that helped

Again welcome and good luck

I have a 240SD I installed a Garmin 3205 with a RAM mount on the Window support as well. I drilled the recommended hole for the gromet my garmin came with and used that. I put the whole near the pole so the cord come out of the back of the garmin and goes into the helm. I didn't seal it at all so that I can lengthen and shorten the cord as I wanted to. The whole is tight enough to hold the groment in and would get most water out if it were spashed.

I'd show you pictures but don't have my boat right now (long story) but as soon as I get it back I'll be taking some pictures of it all.

Paul and Morpheus,

Thanks guys for the quick replies.. I should have known better than to consider the compass idea...thanks for the reminder. I think I will drill a hole behind the pole, HEY that rhymes  and go with the grommet idea. My mount hasn't shown up yet but at least I can wire it and be ready.

Paul, thanks for the original pictures, I couldn't believe my luck when I ran across them. I was really scratching my head as to where to mount the thing. Of course I told my wife that we should have bought the 270 or 290 and then I wouldn't have this problem.

HEre is a tip I wish I had thought about before I started drilling. Get your shop vac or any vac and have someone one turn it on and hold it near your drilling point there will be alot of fiberglass dust going everywhere.

when it come to running cables into the helm or deck. I would recommend looking at a compression fitting similiar to the one in the attached URL.

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...e&storeNum=null&subdeptNum=null&classNum=null

I used one similiar to this one to keep my antenna cable from chafing on my VHF. as they come in different sizes and have a compression O Ring this is good way to make the install look clean.

unless this fitting opens up to accept the wire it wont work.. the ends of the garmin or any unit have huge pluts on them and you have to drill a hole as big as the plug(not the wire) to run the wire into the area you need.. i would not recoment cutting the wiring.. this piece is only good for raw wire with no ends on it.. thats the way i see it

Thanks Tom, that is a good looking fitting and I ordered one. My wires are raw on the one end and I have to put my own ends on them so it will work great for me. Just waiting for it so I know what size hole to drill. This has been an extremely helpful thread. Thanks to all.

Paul,
What I could not see is where your wires are coming from and where you routed them. Do you have pictures of that or a description?

Thanks again

Paul -
I can't thank you enough for taking the time out to do this post. I bought a Garmin 440 for my SeaRay 175 and have been at a loss for days on where and how to mount it.
