Anyone know if Phifertex screen material will keep out those little gnats? I know they make nylon netting for insect screens but not sure how durable it is.

Standard Phifertex is not tight enough to keep out the small gnats. The plus is a tigher weave but would most likely reduce your visibility alot because of the thicker coating. I would suggest standard screening or the one made for no-see-ums / gnats. Keep in mind some still find their way in even with solid canvas.

Thanks. I’ll get some samples. I want something durable

So in all fairness to Phifertex materials I just wanted to clarify my previous statement. I initially jumped to the conclusion that you were asking about what most of us talk about as Phifertex (or Phifertex Plus) which is a color coated mesh material.

What I did neglect to mention is that Phifertex (which is a line of product from a company named Phifer) and they also have a line of insect screening that is commonly used in the industry and we use their insect screening for marine products. This is a fiberglass strand weave that is fairly durable and is most likely what you are looking for.

So, do not discount Phifertex insect screening - just make sure to communicate to get what you want and samples are a great way.

An anecdotal story. I had Phifertex mesh screens made for a camper enclosure. They worked well to keep out the bugs, as well as shade the window material to make it last longer. It might be just our area, but the standard Phifertex coated mesh seemed to keep out the gnats and no-see-ums.

A suggestion for your project. Make the screens zip open on the sides and bottom. My screens were permanently sewn into the zip-off side and back panels, with the window material smile zips to roll them up. There were many times I wished that the screens could also zip open to roll up with the window so that I didn't have to remove the whole panel.
