Hi All

I am changing my Gimbal Bearings and the PerfProtech sales person told me to buy the Perma-Lube bearings for my Alpha II drives.

Reading the "Instructions" it reads that it does not need grease and also to remove and plug the Grease Fitting. Additionally, it reads that it does not need a Grease Retention Seal (Which I purchased anyway)

I just feel uncomfortable just pushing in the new bearing and not applying grease.

Anyone ever use these Perma-Lube (By Quicksilver) bearings?

I'm not sure what yr alphas you have, that said I have 2001 yrs and just replaced mine in both drives last yr. JMHO, but I prefer the non- permalube myself, but I prob grease mine every trip or every other. And I wouldn't install them w/o new seals either. But the seal is there to help hold the grease when you lube the gimbal bearing, non-permalube that is.

If you look at the newer bravo III drives there isn't even a grease fitting for the gimbal bearing.

I didn't see where he had bravo drives.......

Well its the same bearing in an Alpha gen II as it is in a Bravo. So if you don't need to (or can't) lube it in a Bravo drive you won't need to in an Alpha drive.

My new last year alpha has the perma lube bearing. One less thing to maintain. So far so good.

True, But I prefer to be able to lube mine, what do I know though, I work on commercial aircraft...... Having seen where they are made (Mexico), I'll take the non-permalubes myself....

I think I would too but it's not possible on my drive. The other thing is you can't lube it while it's in the water, and for the people who think that maintenance only consists of waxing the boat a permalube one is the better way to go.
