Dang as if the weekend wasn't enough this am I show up for work and my shop is a wreck. Early yesterday am the guard caught people in the building. The guess is they were looking for scrap metal to sell. This is a big problem in my area... just crazy how people are that desperate. I am very thankful for what I have.
Code:

That's no good. Did they get anything or did the guard catch them to be arrested?

We had someone steal used carbide from our shop. We called some local scrap dealers and found it..literally just up the road. It turns out it was an employee as he used his drivers license for ID to sell it... So he loses his job and had to pay back the $150 he was given... obviously not using the right risk/reward formula

Call your local scrap dealers if you know what was taken they are very helpful in trying to prevent the purchase of stolen merchandise.

Recently I've seen plastic shopping carts ripped apart just to scrap what little metal they had in them. Makes me wonder how my Bravo 3 props survive the Winter lay up every year. Desperate times indeed.

No we believe they were checking it out to see what was here. I don't think they knew a guard is here after working hours. The guard cornered them in our warehouse but ofcourse our local police could not find them. Our local law enforcement is usless. Few years back had a break in at a friends diner. Had the suspect on film and recognized the kid as the cleaning company's son. Police say they don't have enough proof... so yeah not much luck on finding the guys.

We did up security to two guards instead of one making the rounds!

Every time gasoline gets to $4 (and crack gets to ....whatever) everyone here has to guard anything stored outside as well as scrap. I have a monitored alarm system on my shop, but I also have an enclosed metal building a little too far away for the alarm company's wireless technology. I had a sign painter make signs for each door on the storage building that say:

PLEASE KEEP THE DOOR SHUT &
DON'T BOTHER THE SNAKES !
THEY ARE HERE TO EAT THE MICE & RATS.

I can't even get my friends to go in there.

I had my scrap pile hauled off last year and got 3K for it. I didn't realize scrap prices were so high and they told me I would have gotten considerably more a year or two earlier. The good news is I've only needed something off the pile a couple times since it's been gone.

Attached to our building is a 9' chain link fence w/ privacy slats around our scrap area. This is kept locked nights and weekends. I was away and returned mid-day to find a professional scrap truck ( Nice one w/ a small crane ) backed inside the gates. I pulled within inches of his truck and the guy spoke first and said, the owner gave him permission to load up. I curiously asked if he had any problems lately. He said, no. I told him if he does come up w/ anything he could mention it to the sheriff when he gets here. I pressed charges.

Frank- I do the the sign!

OH yeah I still have people wondering on my land when I find them I ask who gave them permission to be there. They always say oh (always give my fathers name) said we could be back here. Always get a funny look when I tell him that they must have used a Weegie board cause he passed away 11 years ago. People will try anything. I don't have faith that these people will be caught but oh well... We will just have to be a little more vigilant of whats going on around there.

Frank, I too love the sign... I may have to use that one!

Trespass, even criminal trespass, are not crimes that our local law enforcement sees fit to invest time in. When you consider multiple court appearances, escorting the criminal to the courthouse and back to jail, you can see where hauling them in is only a small part of the picture. That means those of us out in the country are left to handle things ourselves. I have a continuing problem with hunters coming on our place to hunt deer and turkey. After having arrows stuck in my roof and swimming pool steps, windshields shot out on a dump truck and a backhoe, I've just become a grouch and stopped letting anyone hunt here. There are still people who think they have a God given right to hunt a deer anywhere he goes. I ran one guy off 3 times and when I found his truck parked in my field on cold Saturday near the end of deer season, I went to the house, got my backhoe and proceeded to dig a 6 ft wide trench 8 ft deep all the way around his truck. I called both wrecker companies, explained the circumstances and told them I'd have them arrested for trespassing if they came on my place to help the guy. It took him about 6 weeks working on the weekends with a shovel to get his truck out...........of course, I dug out what he put back a few times. He hasn't seen fit to try hunting here since.

You don't really need to be crazy; just make them think you are, and word gets around.

Frank,

That is absolutely beautiful! I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he went back to his truck!

That was beautiful! I just wish the whole country could handle it that way!!

It gives you a different outlook.

Moral of the story!
I need to go buy a backhoe!

I like the way you handle things Frank. I think we would get a long just fine.

That's great Frank... like Jason, I need a backhoe!

We came into the warehouse one day and had no water. I went out the front, the main water meter had been taken, 3 empty pizza boxes around it.
Called a Plummer in, he made a fortune, went for a walk down the street and picked himself up 6 more warehouses with the same issue.

Snakes and backhoes are definatly effective but for those that don't have them,it's only good for a chuckle. I can't condem law enforcement for using man power to address more serious matters because they simply can't afford enough help due to budgets. I say instead of looking for ways to trip up Arizona in thier attempts to handle crime, law makers use thier model and untie the local court's hands. Prisoner work camps performing services would allow citys and states to allocate additional funds to law enforcement and other short funded departments.
BTW, I don't believe hard times is to blame. Drugs and people to lazy to work is the the problem.

Could not agree more Jason, just love the way Frank handled that...classic!

Jason, I disagree with your thread title "People are Desperate! broke into my shop!". Really???

So far we have heard of employees, "son of cleaning company owner", and "a professional scrap truck" are the perps of theft. Not one of these anecdotal cases are a parent of starving children just trying to feed their kids. More likely the entitled taking what the are entitled to from those with too much. Respect for property rights have disappeared with their entitlement.

The law enforcement community is a capitalistic venture anymore, we might as well privatize it as they only want to do what they make money on anyway.
