Parents asking for jobs for their kids

Our company regularly hires family. They are called walk in applicants. Many college grads are hired by this process however they are all merited on their skill level. We can get you in the door but staying there is up to you.
I arranged interviews for folks but whether they got the job or not, was based on their merit. I have never arranged an interview for a person who’s parents asked me to. Nor have I ever indorsed a person’s performance or character. This is a sure way to get burned.
If you want a job at least man up and ask for the interview yourself even if you know an insider.

We had a kid(summer help) two summers in a row, good worker, planned to be a Dr of some type. Year three he was all set up and then some poor planning resulted in the need for less summer help. I heard this kid was a casualty and had him stop in. He was in a bind now to find a job, he needed the money, was paying his own way. I got on the phone to a friend at the largest employer in town, explained the situation, asked if he could help the kid. I told the young fellow to keep quiet as to how this developed, that what we were doing was not the norm. He went to work there the next day, they liked him, and he worked there during Christmas, spring break, and the next summer too. During that summer he came to see me, thanked me...they paid their temps better. He was surprised that we went out of our way to help him. I never saw him again but heard he did become a Dr. You could tell he was one to excel if he had the chance...sometimes it don't hurt to bend the rules a little.

Yea, but his parents didn't try to do it for him... That is different.

MM

That's correct MM, I meant to add that.

I actually called parents once. They were business owners and I knew them some, good people. They had a son(21yo) that was very capable...on good days, he had learned a lot working in the family business. But in his later teen years developed drug & alcohol problems. I had heard of their struggle with him. I talked to the kid often and tried to help. I called the parents, I knew a job was important not from the money standpoint but more so to keep him busy. I let them know he was about out the door. They figured I had been stretching things for him and appreciated the effort, but understood The kid would straighten up for a while, things looked good and then go to hell, he tried but couldn't make it, ran himself in the ground and passed away in his early 30's.

Funny you bring this up......My son is 17 and we worked on his resume yesterdayand he has a better resume than me.....
He is doing on his own and wants to intern in California this summer.......Obviously it did not copy and paste right...

I like your idea of making the kids work elsewhere first. I hadn't actually thought of that but it makes sense. I will have to remember that when the time comes. Maybe I can ask Gary to hire them!!

crap, hopefully you didn't find out my name was Gary and you meant the other Gary!
